Beyond directly making your character stronger through talents, equipment, enchants, etc., there are 2 more things you can use in order to improve your performance as a player: addons & macros. You shouldn’t understate how much of an impact they can have on your gameplay — increasing your DPS or healing by a considerable percentage, preventing you from dying, and so on. You will need the best addons & macros to be the best Protection Warrior you can be!

General

Protection Warriors do not require a whole lot of addons or macros, only having the need for a few essential tools that most classes and specializations will want to acquire as well.

  • DeadlyBossMods – Allows you to track boss abilities. A must-have for raiding.
  • Details – Shows you how much damage, healing, etc., everyone in your raid is doing. Flex on your friends! As a tank, you also get to track threat with Details TinyThreat.
  • WeakAuras – An addon that allows you to create custom notifications or to modify your U.I.

WeakAuras

WeakAuras is a versatile addon with almost limitless possibilities. It allows you to install mini-addons created by other players (which, confusingly, are also called “WeakAuras”) to perform specific tasks, such as tracking the cooldown of a spell, having a visual or audio notification when something procs, giving you a warning when a boss uses an ability, etc. You can find WeakAuras that suit your needs on wago.io. It’s strongly recommended that you use WeakAuras; they’re a huge quality-of-life boost.

Secondly, it would be a good idea to individually create WeakAuras for effects such as trinkets, allowing you to properly time your cooldowns with your trinket procs.

Macros

Essential

Protection Warriors require a large number of Macros in order to be as efficient as possible! Most of them are quality-of-life improvements, but some of them are absolutely necessary to tank as best as possible!

Mouseover Macro

Mouseover macros can be effectively used on any type of ability! They allow you to use an ability on an enemy without being forced to click on another enemy and change your current target. Some examples of useful mouseover macros are the following:

#Showtooltip Taunt
/cast [@mouseover,nodead] Taunt
#Showtooltip Charge
/cast [@mouseover, nodead] Charge

Heroic strike/Cleave Macro

Both Heroic Strike and Cleave are not affected by GCD! This means you can effectively spam the abilities in conjunction with your other abilities. To achieve this in the most optimal way, you can bind Heroic Strike and Cleave to each and single one of your offensive abilities!

#Showtooltip Devastate
/cast Devastate
/cast Heroic Strike
#Showtooltip Revenge
/cast Revenge
/cast Cleave

Charge/Heroic Throw

Heroic Throw is not affected by GCD, allowing you to gain additional threat even while using Charge or any of your other abilities!

#showtooltip Charge
/cast charge
/cast Heroic Throw

Charge/Intervene Macro

You can use this macro to bind both your Intervene and Charge on the same button! You can choose to bind Intercept on the same button as well for easy usage. Currently, in the WotLK Beta, Intercept seems to not be picked up by the macro; however, it might become available with the actual release of WotLK Classic, being worthy of a mention.

#Showtooltip Charge
/Cast [mod:alt] Intervene
/Cast Charge

With this macro, you can simply hold down [Alt] to instantly change to Inverne, all with a single button! You can effectively use this type of a macro to bind multiple spells to the same button and simply alternate between them by holding down keys like [Alt] and [Shift], while pressing the button!

Panic Button

Generally speaking, you do not want to use all of your defensive abilities at the same time. However, there will likely be situations causing you to stress out a little, and having such a macro in your toolkit can be quite handy.

#showtooltip Last Stand
/cast Last Stand
/cast Shield Wall
/cast Shield Block
/cast Spell Reflection
