Equipment will be the main source of your character’s power, contributing the biggest bulk of your stats. It is therefore very important that you choose the correct equipment for each slot — commonly referred to as “best in slot” equipment – in order to maximize your power.
This guide will help you choose the best equipment possible for each phase, but also the best equipment you can find outside of raids, known as “pre-raid” gear or “pre-BiS”.

Upon hitting 80, you should begin farming Heroic++ Dungeons for Emblem of Conquest to eventually purchase Conqueror’s Cowl of Sanctification.
In the meantime, you can keep an eye out for Valorous Cowl of Sanctification, the token for which drops in all Heroic++ instances. If you are not yet ready for Heroic++ Dungeons, there are three viable options from Heroic+ listed above.

Your tier 8.5 and tier 8 helmets, Conqueror’s Cowl of Sanctification & Valorous Cowl of Sanctification respectively, are the best helmets in the game for a Discipline priest. This is due to the overwhelming power of your 4 piece set bonus.
If you already have 4 pieces of tier and are looking for a piece to exclude from your set, Crown of Luminescence & Cowl of Dark Whispers are fantastic pre-ToGC options.

In order to secure your 4 piece set bonus, you’ll want to use Conqueror’s Cowl of Sanctification. Your 4 piece is extremely powerful and should be your main priority when gearing this phase.
Disregarding the power of your 4 piece, Crown of Luminescence is the most powerful helmet stat wise in the game. Closely followed by Cowl of Dark Whispers, both of these are viable options if you don’t yet have the correct 4 pieces of tier.

Pendant of the Shallow Grave is by far the most powerful option a fresh level 80 Disc priest can obtain. Acquire it by farming Heroic++ Dungeons for Sidereal essences.
During your Heroic++ grind, keep an eye out for the Pendant of the Piercing Glare. It is not as good as the Pendant of the Shallow Grave, but is far superior to the rest of the items on this list.
Titanium Spellshock Necklace is a relatively inexpensive craftable BoE that should be purchasable on your servers auction house. However, consider running some Heroic+ dungeons first in search of the other wands on this list, as they are quite a bit more powerful.

Charm of Meticulous Timing is the best necklace outside of ToGC. It drops off of XT-002 Deconstructor in 25 man Ulduar, which is a heal intensive and relatively difficult encounter. It is also contested by every healer, so it may hard to acquire. It should be noted that this necklace is itemized better for Holy Paladins and Resto Shaman, so consider passing it to them first.
Pendant of the Shallow Grave is your next best option. It drops off of 10 man Hardmode Thorim, which is commonly considered to be the easiest Hardmode. You can also obtain it via Sidereal Essences from Heroic++ Dungeons.
Life-Binder’s Locket is the best necklace obtainable outside of Ulduar, and can be acquired from a quest item that drops from Sapphiron.
Torque of the Red Dragonflight is also powerful, but pales in comparison to the options listed above. You can acquire this easily via Heroic+ Dungeons.

The best necklace in the game for Discipline Priests is the 
Wail of the Val’kyr. It may be hard to come by, as it is contested by virtually every caster and healer.
Charm of Meticulous Timing is our next best option, and drops off of the XT-002 Deconstructor 25 man Hardmode fight. Its stats are more well suited for a Holy Paladin or Resto Shaman, so consider passing it to them if it drops.
Pendant of the Shallow Grave is a close third option, and is actually superior to Charm of Meticulous Timing on short, less mana intensive fights. It drops from the easiest Hardmode in Ulduar, Thorim 10 man, and is also purchasable from Sidereal Essences.
Sapphire Amulet of Renewal is a distant option and drops off of Iron Assembly 25 HM.

Amice of Inconceivable Horror is the best option for a fresh level 80 Discipline Priest. You can farm this by running lots of Heroic++ Dungeons for Sidereal Essences.
The next best option is your Tier 8.0 shoulders, Valorous Shoulderpads of Sanctification. Consider using this instead of Amice of Inconceivable Horror if it completes your 4 piece set bonus.
Mantle of the Extensive Mind are decent shoulders that should be relatively inexpensive on your servers auction house.
Miasma Mantle is a decent option to these options if you are lucky enough to find one in Heroic+ Dungeons.

Conqueror’s Shoulderpads of Sanctification are not only the best shoulders outside ToGC, but also the best shoulders in the entire game, since you’re going to want to run your 4 piece tier 8.
Amice of Inconceivable Horror have incredible stats if you are not yet concerned about your 4 piece tier 8.
Your tier 8.0 shoulders, Valorous Shoulderpads of Faith, are a fantastic option if you need to fulfill to your tier 8 4 piece bonus.
There are also some viable options from Tier 7 raids such as Mantle of Dissemination & Sympathetic Amice.

In order to secure your 4 piece set bonus, you’ll want to use Conqueror’s Shoulderpads of Sanctification. Your 4 piece is extremely powerful and should be your main priority when gearing this phase.
Amice of Inconceivable Horror is a great alternative if you do not yet have Conqueror’s Shoulderpads of Sanctification, but be warned that it is best in slot for Affliction Warlocks, so it is recommended that you pass to them.
Another viable placeholder until you have your tier is the Mantle of the Unknowing which drops off of normal mode Vezax 25 man.

Despite the hit rating, Drape of the Messenger is the strongest cloak purchasable as a fresh level 80. You can acquire it from Sidereal Essences that drop in Heroic++ Dungeons.
A close runner up is the Cloak of the Dormant Blaze which drops in Heroic++ Dungeons.
Wispcloak is a relatively cheap crafted BoE that should be available on your servers auction house. Buying this would provide a nice boost upon hitting 80, but it will quickly be replaced by easily obtainable badge and dungeon items.
Another powerful cloak option is the Cloak of Kea Feathers. It only costs 25 Emblem of Valor and will get you lots of mileage.
Cloak of the Dormant Blaze & Cloak of the Dying are strong cloak options if you are lucky enough to find it in Heroic+ or Heroic++ Dungeons.

Drape of the Sullen Goddess is an extremely powerful cloak that holds up against any cloak in the game.
Sunglimmer Cloak is also a very powerful option, but it is not recommended to obtain this. If you happen upon the Reply-Code Alpha quest that gives this item, you will likely get far more mileage out of the ring Starshine Circle.
Pennant Cloak is extremely powerful and comparable to nearly any cloak in the entire game. It is heavily contested and drops off of 2 Drake Sartharion, which can be challenging relative to other Tier 7 content.
Cape of the Unworthy Wizard drops off of the final boss of Naxxramas, Kel’Thuzad. It is far inferior to the Pennant Cloak, but may be more easily obtainable as it is less contested.
Cloak of Kea Feathers is very easy to obtain as it only costs 25 Emblem of Valor. It is not as strong as the options listed above.

The best cloak in the game for Discipline Priests is Jaina’s Radiance. It is extremely difficult to obtain, however, as it requires you to clear ToGC Heroic without a single wipe. It is also contested by every caster in the game. Maiden’s Favor is a distant second option, but will be far easier to obtain.
Drape of the Sullen Goddess drops from Freya 25 man Hardmode, which is relatively difficult. It is contested by Holy Paladins and Resto Shaman, but should typically be given to the Discipline Priest first.
Sunglimmer Cloak is also an exceptional cloak, and drops off of a quest item, Reply-Code Alpha, from Algalon The Observer 25 man. The quest offers best in slot rings and cloaks for nearly every DPS and Healer in the game, so it is highly contested. If you are lucky enough to get Reply-Code Alpha, you are better off selecting Starshine Circle instead.

If your 4 piece tier 8 set bonus is not an option yet, consider buying Merlin’s Robe on the auction house. It may be quite pricey, but a chest this powerful is well worth it.

By far the best bracer option outside of ToGC is the crafted BoE Royal Moonshroud Bracers. They are extremely powerful and are comparable to the best bracers in the game.
Grasps of Reason are a close second option, but are highly contested by all casters.
The Shackles of the Odalisque are a lower item level than the bracers above, but are perfectly statted and easily acquirable off of Razorscale, one of the easiest bosses in Ulduar.
There are a few viable bracer options from Tier 7 content. By far the best of which is Unsullied Cuffs off of Sartharion.

Despite the hit rating, Bindings of Dark Essence are the best bracers in the game for a Discipline Priest. They are unfortunately highly contested by most casters, and since they can make use of the hit rating, it is advisable to pass it to them first.
The Royal Moonshroud Bracers are a close second and are purchasable on the auction house.
Armbands of the Ashen Saint are another excellent option, but are contested by Affliction Warlocks.
From Ulduar there are two excellent bracer options, the Grasps of Reason & Shackles of the Odalisque.

The Valorous Gloves of Sanctification are something you should begin to seek out upon hitting 80. As a standalone item they are not exceptional, but obtaining your 4 piece set bonus should be an immediate priority.
Handwraps of Resonance are a phenominal choice to buy immediately after hitting 80. They are an Ulduar 25 man piece that you can buy on the auction house.
All other contenders pale in comparison to the gloves listed above, but there are several viable options from Heroic and Heroic+ dungeons.

If you are looking for a piece to exclude from your tier set, Handwraps of the Vigilant and Pharos Gloves are excellent options.
Handwraps of Resonance are an easy obtainable and solid option. They are an Ulduar 25 man piece that you can buy on the auction house.
Wraps of the Persecuted and Gloves of Token Respect are common drops from both Naxx 10 and 25 man.

Upon hitting 80, your best bet by a mile is to purchase Cord of the White Dawn on your servers auction house. It may be moderately expensive, but it is one of the best belts in the entire game, so you will get a lot of mileage out of it.
If you cannot afford Cord of the White Dawn, Sash of Potent Incantations from Emblem of Conquest is your next best bet.
If you cannot yet afford Cord of the White Dawn, Agonal Sash & Sash of Mortal Desire are decent starters and that drop in Heroic+ Dungeons.
Sash of the Servant drops from Azjol’Nerub Heroic. It may be worth your time to run it heroic Azjol’Nerub because it also drops Rod of the Fallen Monarch, one of the best starting wands for a discipline priest.

Outside of ToGC, Starwatcher’s Binding is your best bet. It drops off of Algalon The Observer 25 man who is quite challenging, and the belt itself is highly contested amongst most casters.
The runner up is the Cord of the White Dawn. It is crafting via Tailoring and can be purchased on your servers auction house.
If you cannot afford Cord of the White Dawn, Sash of Potent Incantations from Emblem of Conquest is your next best bet.
There are two viable options that drop from Heroic++ Dungeons: Binding of the Dragon Matriarch & Conductive Cord, so keep an eye out for them while you are farming.
Leash of Heedless Magic drops from Malygos 10 and 25 man. It is heavily contested by all casters.
Out of Naxxramas you can find both Sash of Solitude & Sash of the Parlor which are viable options, but pale in comparison to the other two belts on this list.

Cord of Biting Cold are the best belts in the game despite the hit rating. They are contested by most caster DPS who can get value from the hit rating, so consider passing to them first.
Starwatcher’s Binding is the second best belt in the game. It drops off of the very challenging Algalon The Observer in 25 man and is heavily contested by nearly all casters. Cinch of the Undying are a very solid 10 man option, and should be easier to come by than the two belts listed above.
Cord of the White Dawn still holds up as the fourth best belt in the entire game, making this purchase a no-brainer.
Sash of Potent Incantations is a great belt early on in Ulduar, and only costs 28 Emblem of Conquest. You should not consider spending Emblem of Conquest until you have purchased both of the tier pieces.

As a fresh level 80 Discipline Priest, your tier 8.0 legs Valorous Leggings of Sanctification are your best bet. You can acquire them easily in Heroic++ Dungeons while you are farming Sidereal Essences for various other pieces.
While you are in Heroic++ Dungeons, keep an eye out for Leggings of Unstable Discharge. Their stats are very powerful, but they lack the benefit of the 4 piece tier 8 set bonus.
If you find yourself with an excess of badges, consider purchasing Valorous Leggings of Faith.
There are also several options in Heroic+ Dungeons such as Heroes’ Leggings of Faith, Leggings of the Instructor & Leggings of Sapphiron. But bear in mind that these legs pale in comparison to the other leg pieces above them on this list.
Pre-ToC/Onyxia’s Lair
The best legs outside of ToGC (and in the entire game) are your Tier 8.5 and Tier 8.0 legs respectively. Your Tier 8 set bonus is extremely powerful, so you should seek out these legs ASAP.
If you do not yet have your tier 8 set bonus, or are looking for a piece to exclude, the Leggings of the Enslaved Idol off Freya 25 man Hardmode as well as the Leggings of Profound Darkness off of Vezax 10 man Hardmode are your best bet.
There are two legs that drop from Tier 7 content that are quite powerful as well. Keep an eye out for Leggings of Mortal Arrogance or Distorted Limbs from various bosses in Naxxramas.

Since your 4 piece set bonus is so powerful, you should seek out either Conqueror’s Leggings of Sanctification or Valorous Leggings of Sanctification. Even though there are better standalone items, you will want to secure tier legs to secure your 4 piece set bonus.
If you do not yet have your set bonus or are looking for a piece to exclude, the Leggings of the Deepening Void are the best standalone legs in the game.
Leggings of the Enslaved Idol & Leggings of Profound Darkness from Ulduar still hold up as well.

Alternatively, Savior’s Slippers are a crafted BoE option that are quite powerful and purchasable on your servers auction house.
Arcanic Tramplers drop from Malygos 10 and 25 man and are also BoE.
If you don’t have gold to spare, Slippers of the Holy Light can be purchased with 40 Emblem of Valor.
If you happen to find Sullen Cloth Boots from Heroic+ Dungeons, these are a viable option as well.

The best boots in the game outside of ToGC are the Boots of Fiery Resolution. They drop off of Hardmode Flame Leviathan in Ulduar, which is a fairly easy boss, but they are heavily contested by most casters and healers.
Treads of the False Oracle are similarly contested and drop off of Yogg Saron 25 man Hardmode.
Starlight Treads from Sidereal Essences still hold up against all the boots in the game, and are purchasable before you even enter a raid.
Savior’s Slippers are a cheap and effective BoE option if you are lacking quality boots.
There are several powerful options from Tier 7 content as well, such as the Arcanic Tramplers (which are BoE), Boots of Persuasion & Serene Echoes.

By far the best boots in the game are the Boots of the Mourning Widow. They are however highly contested by most caster DPS and some healers. Since they have haste on them, consider passing to a peer who can make better use of this stat.
Boots of Fiery Resolution, Starlight Treads & Treads of the False Oracle all still hold up well against even the best boots in the game.

As a fresh level 80 Discipline Priest, you have excellent ring options. You should farm lots of Sidereal Essences from Heroic++ Dungeons in order to purchase both Nebula Band & Signet of Soft Lament. These rings are incredibly powerful and hold up well even against the best rings in the game.
If you do not have the time to farm lots of Sidereal Essences, consider buying the Inscribed Ring of the Kirin Tor. It will cost you a pretty penny, but in exchange you get a powerful ring and a second hearthstone.
While you are farming Heroic++ Dungeons, keep an eye out for Lady Maye’s Sapphire Ring and the Band of Neglected Pleas.
If you find yourself with an excess of badges, consider purchasing Renewal of Life for 40 Emblem of Valor.

Starshine Circle is an extremely powerful ring that holds up against even the best rings in the game. It drops off a quest item from 25 man Algalon The Observer. The quest item Reply-Code Alpha gives best in slot rings and cloaks for nearly every class in the game, so it is heavily contested.
Nebula Band & Signet of Soft Lament are excellent rings that you can purchase before you even enter a raid via Sidereal Essences from Heroic++ Dungeons.
Fire Orchid Signet is another ring purchasable via Sidereal Essences. It lacks the output potential of the two rings listed above, but has superior sustain.
Conductive Seal is also a powerful option, but it is far better suited for other caster DPS classes. It remains a Best-in-Slot item for several caster classes even in ToGC, so it is not advisable to take it over them.

Band of Deplorable Violence are the best rings in the game for Discipline Priests. They are also highly contested by almost every caster and healer, and drop off of the final boss in ToGC Heroic, Anub’arak, making them very difficult to acquire.
Similarly, Ring of the Darkmender are also extremely powerful, but heavily contested. They are best in slot for every healer in the game.
Starshine Circle from Ulduar still holds up quite well when compared to the two BIS ToGC rings listed above.
Nebula Band, Signet of Soft Lament & Fire Orchid Signet are all purchasable via Sidereal Essences from Heroic++ Dungeons and continue to be very powerful, even in ToGC.

The best trinket in the game for a fresh level 80 Discipline Priest is Sif’s Remembrance. You can purchase it for Sidereal Essences that drop from Heroic++ Dungeons.
Your options past Sif’s Remembrance are quite bleak. The second best trinket before raiding is Darkmoon Card: Illusion, but you’ll want to replace this quickly once you get into raids.
Past that you can keep an eye out for Spark of Hope while you’re farming Heroic++ Dungeons. It may provide some much needed regen while your early gear is lacking mana sustain.
Darkmoon Card: Greatness is another option, and can be purchased on the auction house.
If you are a Jewelcrafter, Figurine – Sapphire Owl can also be a powerful trinket early on.

Show of Faith is an amazing trinket and offers a balance of mana sustain and output. It drops off of Hardmode Yogg Saron in Ulduar.
Illustration of the Dragon Soul is an insanely overpowered trinket for Discipline Priests. Even in ToGC it is still the best output trinket in the game for Discipline Priests. Regardless of the quality of your current trinkets, you should farm The Obsidian Sanctum weekly until you obtain this.
Sif’s Remembrance is similar to Show of Faith and operates the exact same way. You can purchase this trinket before you even enter a raid via Sidereal Essences from Heroic++ Dungeons.
Forethought Talisman is a solid output option and is very easy to obtain. It is relatively uncontested and drops off of multiple bosses in Naxxramas 10 and 25 man.
There are also three BoEs that are relatively cheap and can be purchased on your servers auction house: Darkmoon Card: Greatness, Je’Tze’s Bell and Darkmoon Card: Illusion. They are all very close in strength, so if you are short on gold, consider buying whichever two are cheapest.

Solace of the Defeated offers unparalleled mana sustainability. It is only contested by Holy Priests and Resto Druids, so hopefully you manage to acquire this if you are farming ToGC weekly.
Show of Faith is a well balanced trinket with great output potential with its static spellpower, and lots of sustain with its mp5 proc.
Illustration of the Dragon Soul remains the best output trinket in the entire game, even two phase later. It has absurd spell power potential, even more so if you stack it before an encounter begins.
Sif’s Remembrance is a baby version of Show of Faith, and drops off of Thorim 10 man Hardmode, which is quite easy. You can also farm this in Heroic++ Dungeons with Sidereal Essences if you can’t manage to get it from Ulduar.

By far the best weapon option for a fresh level 80 Discipline Priest is Aesuga, Hand of the Ardent Champion. You can acquire it without stepping into a raid, by farming Heroic++ Dungeons for Sidereal Essences.
The rest of the items on this pale in comparison to Aesuga, Hand of the Ardent Champion. The next closest option is Mariel’s Sorrow, which drops from the new 5-man dungeon Trial of the Champion.
As an immediate option right as you hit 80, Titansteel Guardian is your best bet. It is crafted by Blacksmithing but is a BoE, so you can purchase it on your servers auction house.
Hammer of the Astral Plane & Ice Spire Scepter are powerful weapons from Heroic+ Dungeons.
War Mace of Unrequited Love drops from the last boss in The Nexus Heroic and is also a solid starter weapon.

Val’anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings is the best weapon in the game, and you acquire it without stepping foot in ToGC. It is difficulty and tedious to build, as it requires multiple full clears of Ulduar 25 man.
The next best option before entering ToGC is Constellus. It is statted perfectly for us and drops from multiple bosses in Ulduar.
Staff of Endless Winter is the only viable staff for a Discipline Priest before ToGC. It drops off of 25 man Hodir Hardmode, which has become one of the easier Hardmodes for a group with solid DPS.
Aesuga, Hand of the Ardent Champion is the last Ulduar-level weapon available to us. Luckily, you can farm this in Heroic+ Dungeons via Sidereal Essences before even stepping into a raid.
The remaining weapons on this list pale in comparison to those listed above.
From Tier 7 content, there are three decent weapons available to us: Torch of Holy Fire, Hammer of the Astral Plane & Ice Spire Scepter.

Val’anyr, Hammer of Ancient Kings is technically our BIS weapon, however, it is generally considered to be inferior on a Discipline healer compared to any other healing class/spec in the game. It may even be superior on a DPS class such as a Boomkin, Shadow Priest or Enhance Shaman, so there is little reason to ever seek this item over another member of your raid.
The Relentless Gladiator’s Mageblade is extremely powerful due to its high base spellpower, but is very difficult to obtain to someone not already adept at PvP Arena. It requires an arena rating of 2200, which would place you in the top few percent of the arena ladder.Misery’s End are the best weapons available to us from ToGC. These are a realistic BIS option if you find yourself clearing ToGC each week.

If you are seeking a wand as a fresh level 80 Discipline Priest, your best bet is to farm Heroic++ Dungeons for a chance at Igniter Rod or Scepter of Murmuring Spirits.
If you are seeking an immediate upgrade upon hitting level 80, Faces of Doom can be crafted via Inscription and purchased on the auction house.
Scepter of Murmuring Spirits is slightly better than Faces of Doom, but will require some luck in Heroic+ Dungeons.
For 25 Emblem of Heroism you can buy Handbook of Obscure Remedies which is a decent starter offhand.

Cosmos is by far the best offhand option that drops from Ulduar and is the 3rd best offhand in the entire game. It drops off of the challenging boss Algalon The Observer, and is contested by most casters.
Ironmender is a much more easily obtainable and less contested alternative that drops off of one of the easiest bosses in Ulduar, Kologarn.
Igniter Rod is also a viable option and now drops in Heroic++ Dungeons.
