Professions can be used to optimize your character and generate gold. Unfortunately for Holy Paladins, the path to optimization and gold making do not align, so you will have to decide what is most important to you.

Best Professions

If your goal is to be the most powerful healer possible, the best two professions are Engineering and Jewelcrafting. This particular list of professions is geared towards the player that wants to be the best healer they can be. If your desired profession was not listed here, it is not considered to be the best for Holy Paladins, but don’t let that stop you from playing whatever you feel is the most fun!

Engineering is the absolute King of PvE professions in Wrath of the Lich King for virtually every class. Nitro Boots gives you a massive speed boost on only a 3 minute cooldown, allowing you to get out of the fire faster and start healing again quicker. In case engineering didn’t sound broken enough to you already, engineers also get Hyperspeed Accelerators, which becomes one of our strongest cooldowns. This engineering specific glove enchant increases your haste by 340 for 12 seconds on a 1 minute cooldown, shortening your Holy Light cast time by roughly .15 seconds.

Engineers also have access to powerful explosives such as Saronite Bombs and Global Thermal Sapper Charge. These are so powerful in AoE scenarios, that using them as a healer is often worth it.

Jewelcrafting allows us to use 3 super powerful gems that are exclusive to JCs. The gem Brilliant Dragon’s Eye should be the gem you choose, as Intellect is our best stat.

Jewelcrafting grants a total of 54 extra intellect in phase 1 and 2 of Wrath of the Lich King.

Useful Professions

Tailoring deserves to be at the top of this list, as it gives you a massive spellpower proc in the form of Lightweave Embroidery. This 295 spellpower proc lasts 15 seconds with only a 45 second internal cooldown. If you are lucky, and the proc occurs during a large damage window, Tailoring may have higher value than any profession other than Engineering. But due to the inherent inconsistency of random proc buffs, you will likely not get anywhere near the maximum possible value of this.

Blacksmithing is competitive with Jewelcrafting. It allows the user to add two additional gem sockets to their gear (in their bracer and gloves).

Blacksmithing grants a total of 32 extra intellect in phase 1 and 2 of Wrath of the Lich King.

Enchanting is not as good as the professions listed above, but it is still viable and a great way of making passive income via disenchanting. Enchanting gives ring enchants, which are otherwise unattainable.

Enchanting grats a total of 46 spellpower.

Inscription get the special shoulder enchant Master’s Inscription of the Storm. This is far superior to the Exalted Hodir enchants.

Inscription grants a total of 46 spellpower.

Alchemists have access to a nifty trinket, the Mercurial Alchemist Stone. This trinket is not pre-bis nor bis so it will be replaced quickly.

Leatherworkers get the special bracer enchant Fur Lining – Spell Power. Since we typically enchant our bracers with intellect, this is not a linear upgrade.

Leatherworking grants a total of 46 spellpower compared to the normal spellpower bracer enchant.

Sub-Par Professions

Mining is a great way to generate gold, but unfortunately will not improve our healing in any way.

Mining grants a total of 60 stamina through the passive ability Toughness.

Herbalism is a great way to generate gold, but unfortunately barely improves our healing output. Herbalists get access to the Lifeblood ability, which applies a small HoT to yourself. This HoT only heals you and does not scale with spellpower.

Skinning is a great way to generate gold, and increases your critical strike chance via the passive ability Master of Anatomy. This is superior to the other gathering professions, but still pales in comparison to every non-gathering profession.

Skinning grants a total of 40 critical strike rating through the passive ability Master of Anatomy.
