Rune Engraving is a new system for Season of Discovery. It allows each class to tailor their gameplay experience by unlocking new unique abilities! In this guide you’ll find all of the runes that are currently available for Mages in Phase 3 of SoD. You can also see them all in our Season of Discovery Talent Calculator.

Levels with a single asterisk (*) are runes that have a specific level requirement while those with a double asterisk (**) are our recommendations based on the level of enemies in the area or other factors such as abilities that will make the process easier.

Below you’ll find a quick overview of how to get each of the SoD Mage Runes. Refer to our individual guides for more detailed walkthroughs!

Arcane Blast Rune

Arcane Blast is a Mage Rune for the Gloves slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Cast Arcane Explosion near 3 purple crystals along The Zoram Strand in Ashenvale, in this order:
  • South – 13, 24
  • Middle – 14, 19
  • North – 13, 15
• If you hit the third crystal while you have 2 stacks of Arcane Charge, you’ll get the rune.

Arcane Surge Rune

Arcane Surge is a Mage Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Hand in Waylaid Supplies crates until you reach Friendly reputation with  Azeroth Commerce Authority or  Durotar Supply and Logistics.
• Purchase the rune from a Supply Officer. Supply Officers can be found near the Auction House in each major city.

Brain Freeze Rune

Brain Freeze is a Mage Rune for the Boots slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Pick up the quest Highway Robbery from an Extinguished Campfire near the Kodo Graveyard in Desolace (47, 54).
• Speak with Bibbly F’utzbuckle at the northern crossroads in Desolace (63, 39) to progress the quest to On the Lam.
• Speak with Tokal inside the inn at Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale (27, 77) to pick up the quest Cherry for Your Thoughts?.
• Buy a Cherry Grog from the nearby vendor, Nixxrax Fillamug, and bring it to Tokal to get the quest No Honor Among Thieves.
• Use the boat on the southern shore of Arathi Highlands near the bridge (53, 91) to travel to the east coast.
• Speak to Illari Duskfeather and either agree with her (Alliance only) or fight her to get Illari’s Key.
• Use the key to open the nearby Jewel-Encrusted Box to loot the rune.

Burnout Rune

Burnout is a Mage Rune for the Chest slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Locate a frozen mob at one of the following locations:
  • Dun Morogh: Gol’Bolar Quarry (69, 58)
  • Durotar: east of Razor Hill (69, 58)
  • Elwynn Forest: island in Stone Cairn Lake (77, 51)
  • Tirisfal Glades: north of Brightwater Lake (58, 44)
• Attack it with fire spells to destroy it and loot the rune. You may need the help of another Mage or Warlock for this.

Chronostatic Preservation Rune

Chronostatic Preservation is a Mage Rune for the Boots slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Kill the following mobs in Thousand Needles with frost spells to loot Partial Spell Notes from each:
  • Scorched Screeching Roguefeather (27.0, 47.2)
  • Singed Highperch Consort (11.2, 40.0)
  • Seared Needles Cougar (24.0, 23.6)
    • You’ll need to kill Galak Mauler to get a Cougar Cage Key first – he is near the cage.
• Combine the 3 Partial Spell Notes to get the rune.

Enlightenment Rune

Enlightenment is a Mage Rune for the Chest slot. Here’s how to get it:

Elwynn Forest:

• Use Polymorph on any out-of-place animals you find around Elwynn Forest to get Azora Apprentice Notes.
• When you have 6 Azora Apprentice Notes, combine them to get the rune.

Tirisfal Glades:

• Use Polymorph on Odd Melons scattered around the farms in Tirisfal Glades to get Apothecary Notes.
• When you have 6 Apothecary Notes, combine them to get the rune.

Fingers of Frost Rune

Fingers of Frost is a Mage Rune for the Chest slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Kill any of the following enemies to loot Spell Notes: RING SEFF OSTROF:
  • Gillgar west of the Solliden Farmstead in Tirisfal Glades (27, 47)
  • Hogger in the southwest of Elwynn Forest (28, 90)
  • Old Icebeard in the cave west of Kharanos in Dun Morogh (38, 53)
  • Timber in Iceflow Lake in Dun Morogh (35, 42)
  • Vagash north of Gol’Bolar Quarry in Dun Morogh (61, 48)
  • Zalazane on Echo Isles in Durotar (68, 87)
• Decipher Spell Notes: RING SEFF OSTROF with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Frostfire Bolt Rune

Frostfire Bolt is a Mage Rune for the Belt slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Kill Skullsplitter Mystics near Zul’Gurub in Stranglethorn Vale until one drops a Spell Notes: TROFF IRESTBOL.
• Decipher Spell Notes: TROFF IRESTBOL with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Hot Streak Rune

Hot Streak is a Mage rune for the Belt slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Cast Living Flame or Flamestrike on top of the two bellows of the blacksmith forge at Strahnbrad in Alterac Mountains (60.0, 46.4).
• Kill the level 35 Ancient Fire Elemental that spawns to loot the rune.

Ice Lance Rune

Ice Lance is a Mage Rune for the Gloves slot. Here’s how to get it:

Gnome:

• Reach level 2 and pick up the quest Spell Research from Marryk Nurribit, the Mage Trainer at Anvilmar in Dun Morogh.
• Open a chest between two tents at the trogg camp just southwest of Anvilmar to loot Spell Notes: CALE ENCI.
• Decipher Spell Notes: CALE ENCI with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Human:

• Reach level 2 and pick up the quest Spell Research from Khelden Bremen, the Mage Trainer at Northshire in Elwynn Forest.
• Kill Defias Thugs in the nearby Northshire Vineyards to loot Spell Notes: CALE ENCI.
• Decipher Spell Notes: CALE ENCI with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Troll:

• Reach level 2 and pick up the quest Spell Research from Mai’ah, the Mage Trainer in the Valley of Trials in Durotar.
• Open a chest at the bottom of a pool of water in the back of the Burning Blade Coven cave to the north to loot Spell Notes: CALE ENCI.
• Decipher Spell Notes: CALE ENCI with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Undead:

• Reach level 2 and pick up the quest Spell Research from Isabella, the Mage Trainer in the chapel at Deathknell in Tirisfal Glades.
• Kill Scarlet Initiates nearby to the east to loot Spell Notes: CALE ENCI.
• Decipher Spell Notes: CALE ENCI with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Icy Veins Rune

Icy Veins is a Mage Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Collect 10 books from the following locations:
  • Darkshore: Ruins of Mathystra ruins (59.6, 22.2)
  • Duskwood: western crypt in Raven Hill Cemetary (16.0, 38.5)
  • Elwynn Forest: at the top of the Tower of Azora (65.4, 70.1)
  • Ironforge: in the back chamber of the Hall of Explorers (76.1, 10.2)
  • Loch Modan: in the inn at Thelsamar (35.6, 48.9) – same book found in the Westfall inn so you can’t get both
  • Loch Modan: the middle cave in Mo’grosh Stronghold (77.5, 14.1)
  • Orgrimmer: a rock in Valley of Spirits near the Mage Trainer building (38.5, 78.2)
  • Silverpine Forest: basement of The Sepulcher (43.4, 41.2)
  • Silverpine Forest: inside the town hall at Ambermill (63.5, 63.1)
  • Stonetalon Mountains: a hut in Grimtotem Post (74.4, 85.7)
  • The Barrens: the office at the top of the tower in The Sludge Fen (56.3, 8.8)
  • The Barrens: engineering shop in Ratchet (62.7, 36.3)
  • The Barrens: just outside the Wailing Caverns dungeon portal (52.8, 54.7 on the Cavern of Mists map)
  • Tirisfal Glades: alchemy shop in Brill (59.5, 52.3)
  • Westfall: westernmost house in Moonbrook (45.4, 70.4)
  • Westfall: in the inn at Sentinel Hill (52.7, 53.7) – same book found in the Loch Modan inn so you can’t get both
  • Wetlands: under a pot in Whelgar’s Excavation Site (33.6, 47.9)
• Bring the 10 books to your faction’s Librarian to turn them in and get the rune:
  • Alliance: Garon Wendell in the Mage Quarter of Stormwind City (38, 81)
  • Horde: Owen Thadd in the Magic Quarter of Undercity (74, 33)

Living Bomb Rune

Living Bomb is a Mage Rune for the Gloves slot. Here’s how to get it:

Darkshore:

• Kill Lady Sedorax, a level 18 elite with 3 adds, inside the cave at Cliffspring Falls in Darkshore (56.0, 34.0) to loot Spell Notes: BIVOLG NIMB.
• Decipher Spell Notes: BIVOLG NIMB with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Loch Modan:

• Kill Stonesplinter Seer on the northern island in Loch Modan to loot Chewed Spell Notes.
• Decipher Chewed Spell Notes with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Silverpine Forest:

• Kill Rot Hide Gnolls on Fenris Isle in Silverpine forest to loot A Talking Head, which starts the quest Resting in Pieces.
• Turn in the quest at a grave in the castle courtyard and pick up The Hidden Niche.
• Climb the western tower to turn the quest in at a Dusty Shelf and pick up Wand to Bethor.
• Turn in the quest to Bethor Iceshard in the Magic Quarter of Undercity to pick up A Token of Gratitude, which you can complete to get the rune.

The Barrens:

• Read the Etched Carving at Blackthorn Ridge in the south of The Barrens (45.4, 80).
• Use Blink to jump from one green circle to the next without stepping outside of them.
• Read the second Etched Carving at the end of the path to get the rune.

Westfall:

• Kill the harvester golems found on the farms to loot Spare Reaper Parts.
• Kill Dust Devil in the open fields to loot Elemental Core.
• Combine Spare Reaper Parts with Elemental Core to get a Prototype Engine.
• Use the Prototype Engine to activate a level 18 Harvest Reaper Prototype at one of the farms. Kill it to loot the rune.

Living Flame Rune

Living Flame is a Mage Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Kill any of the following mobs to loot Spell Notes: MILEGIN VALF:
  • Frostmane Seer and Frostmane Shadowcaster in western Dun Morogh
  • Any Burning Blade Cultists north of Razor Hill in Durotar
  • Kobold Geomancer in Jasperlode Mine in Elwynn Forest
  • Scarlet Warrior, Scarlet Missionary, and Scarlet Zealot in Tirisfal Glades
• Decipher Spell Notes: MILEGIN VALF with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Mass Regeneration Rune

Mass Regeneration is a Mage Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Open a Dusty Coffer on a shelf inside the eastern crypt at Raven Hill Cemetery in Duskwood to loot a Decrepit Phylactery.
• Use the Decrepit Phylactery on some Slumbering Bones inside the western crypt to summon a level 25 elite Awakened Lich.
• Kill it to loot the rune.

Missile Barrage Rune

Missile Barrage is a Mage Rune for the Belt slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Speak with the Dalaran Agent at Ariden’s Camp in the northeast of Deadwind Pass (52, 36) to get Ariden’s Sigil.
• Equip Ariden’s Sigil and look for locations where you get the Dark Presence buff:
  • Arathi Highlands (60, 40)
  • Badlands (58, 54)
  • Deadwind Pass (43, 29)
  • Desolace (65, 25)
  • Duskwood (23, 47)
  • Swamp of Sorrows (69, 28)
  • The Barrens (52, 36)
• In each of the above locations, use Ariden’s Sigil to summon a Dark Rider, a level 41 elite, and kill it to loot a relic.
• When you have all seven relics, return to the Dalaran Agent to trade them in for your rune.

Regeneration Rune

Regeneration is a Mage Rune for the Chest slot. Here’s how to get it:

Loch Modan:

• Interact with a stack of books inside one of the huts on the island in Loch Modan to loot Spell Notes: TENGI RONEERA.
• Decipher Spell Notes: TENGI RONEERA with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Silverpine Forest:

• Kill Dalaran Apprentices between Ambermill and Pyrewood Village to loot Spell Notes: TENGI RONEERA.
• Decipher Spell Notes: TENGI RONEERA with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

The Barrens:

• Kill Kolkar Wrangler and Kolkar Stormer around the pools near the Crossroads to loot a Kolkar Booty Key.
• Use the key to open a Kolkar Booty chest at an of the pools – (44, 38), (43, 24), or (53, 42) – and loot Spell Notes: TENGI RONEERA.
• Decipher Spell Notes: TENGI RONEERA with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Westfall:

• Kill Defias Pillagers at Moonbrook to loot Spell Notes: TENGI RONEERA.
• Decipher Spell Notes: TENGI RONEERA with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Rewind Time Rune

Rewind Time is a Mage Rune for the Gloves slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Visit Grizzby inside the inn at Ratchet in The Barrnes.
• Purchase a Spell Notes: Rewind Time from him for 3 gold and use it to get the rune.

Spellfrost Bolt Rune

Spellfrost Bolt is a Mage Rune for the Belt slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Kill Skullsplitter Mystics near Zul’Gurub in Stranglethorn Vale until one drops a Spell Notes: PELFRB STOLLOTS.
• Decipher Spell Notes: PELFRB STOLLOTS with a Comprehension Charm to get the rune.

Spell Power Rune

Spell Power is a Mage Rune for the Boots slot. Here’s how to get it.

• Collect 20 books from the following locations:
  • Any of the books you can collect for the Icy Veins Rune
  • Alterac Mountains: in the tower (48.5, 57.6)
  • Arathi Highlands: outside a tent (73, 65)
  • Badlands: (57, 39)
  • Desolace: on a bench in a house (55, 28)
  • Dustwallow Marsh: (57, 21)
  • Stranglethorn Vale: outside a cave (41.5, 50.8)
  • Swamp of Sorrows: inside a cage (51, 22)
