One of the more versatile classes in World of Warcraft (WoW), the Paladin is equally suited to multiple roles within a group.  Whether or not they are the best tanks in the game is still hotly debated, even to this day and their melee damage capabilities are on par with a Warriors.  Couple all of that with the ability to heal and their survivability skyrockets, making them ideal for soloing in the arena.

Paladins possess a variety of potent and useful abilities as well.  From dealing damage with spells like Judgment, Righteous Fury and Retribution Aura – to tanking with their Blessing of Protections and Devotion Aura – to healing with Holy light and Lay on Hands, not to mention a really decent resurrect with Redemption and a mild Crowd Control (CC) with Hammer of Justice.  Paladins have a large and diverse repertoire of abilities that make them useful in almost any situation. This also makes them really fun and interesting to play.

Races

If you’re looking for a general overview of all of the WoW races, go ahead and click here to see a more detailed and slightly lore based description of the races.  The Paladin has amongst the lowest number of choices of race in the game. They share this aspect with only one other class, the Druid, though the Druid does have at least two choices for faction.  This is actually a good thing, because it will make this choice, at least, a simple one: Dwarf, or Human

  • Dwarf:  Dwarves can negate Bleed, Poison and Disease effects with Stoneform.  It also offers a short term Armor bonus which isn’t a bad thing at all.  Frost Resistance is good for countering frost Mages and the damage from Hunter’s traps.  Most people might not even mention Find Treasure, but a lot of your BiS gear is going to cost you, so the more gold that you can line your pockets with, the better off you’ll be.
  • Human:  Mace Specialization and Sword Specialization will be pretty helpful, especially early on, as many of your best weapons with likely be one or two handed maces and swords.  Perception is a good edge against Rogues in Battlegrounds and sometimes in the arena and can’t hurt.  While The Human Spirit will help with health and mana regeneration.  Like the Dwarf’s Find Treasure, Diplomacy might not seem worth mentioning, but anything that will help you pinch pennies is a good thing and some of the most important BiS items can only be purchased from reputation based vendors.

Professions

Your choice of professions is going to be pretty straightforward and simple.  Like just about all Twinks, Paladins will benefits the most from Engineering the most.  The creation of some decent pre-BiS gear, as well as a variety of very useful gadgets can only be accessed through it.  Make sure you get it early and raise it up as often as possible.

Don’t let your second choice for profession go by the roadside, though!  Your other profession is also a very important choice, as you will need to decide whether you will try and compliment your engineering, try out something else that augments your Twink even more, or simply try an acquire more money.

  • EngineeringEngineering is an absolute must have profession to a level 19 Twink of any class.  The explosive gadgets Big Bronze BombHeavy Dynamite and Explosive Sheep are items you’re going to want to have. They mitigate your damage when your low on mana, and give a decided advantage with of CC with their stun effects.  You can also use items like the Minor Recombobulator to support allies by countering the CC effects of enemy mages.

Another important factor for Engineering is the access it gives you to some lower level Pre BiS gear.  Of particular interest should be the Green Tinted Goggles, which is probably the best item you can get for your head slot before finally catching all of those Keefer’s Angelfish.

  • Mining:  You might just want to go ahead and take up mining, even if you plan to fund your Twink with an alt, or your main.  Twinking in general is expensive, but Twinking a Paladin  is even more so. Paladins need a ton of gold for gear repair and while the cost of a mount might be mitigated slightly, any costs you can further mitigate is invaluable.  You can sell metal bars that you’ve smelted to Blacksmiths directly or on the AH, though you may not wish to sell all that you acquire, as many of the raw materials for Engineering come from Mining.
  • Enchanting:  This is a fantastic Profession if you’d like to maintain low level enchantments on your leveling gear as you work your way up to your BiS equipment.  It’s also great for disenchanting unwanted items to sell the enchanting materials on the AH. This is a great way to meet enchanters as well and you will want to do that, as the best enchantments are what you are going to want for your BiS items when you get that far.

Other Professions: TailoringLeatherworking, Herbalism and Skinning should all simply be avoided, because none of them are of any use to a Paladin, even less so a Twink Paladin of level 19.  So your additional choices are Blacksmithing and Alchemy, of which the choice is dependant of how you fund your Twink. If your main is a miner, go for Blacksmithing, so that you can level it quickly and get some decent low level leveling gear.  If, on the other hand, you supply your Twink with funds from Herbalism, then go for Alchemy and mitigate the cost of your buff consumables.

Secondary Skills

  • Cooking:  For a Twink of any class, the advantages of doing your own cooking are pretty easy to see.  Cooked food offers the Well Fed buff and Twinking is all about squeezing every possible buff or boon out of any situation.  There are six recipes in cooking that offer Well Fed at this level tier, but the cheapest and easiest to acquire is Recipe: Curiously Tasty Omelet.  It can be purchased from Nerrist at the Grom’ gol Outpost and Kendor Kabonka in Stormwind.

Another point on Cooking, a lot of players like doing it.  It’s very popular, but most players tend to not always have the ingredients to try out all of the recipes that they can.  This is a place for you to seize upon a potential opportunity.  There is one decided advantage to not dealing with cooking at all.  Cash. Through the course of leveling, particularly for Horde characters leveling in the Barrens where the Beast population is high, you are going to find a lot of materials for recipes. Instead of using all of those ingredients leveling a skill that you’re not necessarily interested it, you could sell them to young aspiring chefs who need them.  Sounds like a great way to fund that BiS world drop, no?

More importantly, because Secondary Skills can be raised all the way to 225 at level 19, you will be able to use, but not make Heavy Runecloth Bandages.  So, as long as you have another character, or player that can make them for you can acquire and use them and you want to use them, as they will restore your max health each time that they are used.

  • Fishing:  The Lucky Fishing Hat is your BiS head slot item, so enough said right?  You need to raise your fishing if you want to make an effective Twink.  Fishing is also a great vary to earn some side funds, especially if you decide to forgo Cooking and sell all of what you catch.  Always craft or purchase the Aquadynamic Fish Attractor and Bright Baubles.  Until you can make them, you can purchase them at almost any Trade Goods or Fishing Vendor.  Same with the Strong Fishing Pole, which you will also want.

Professions and Skills tend to ride a pendulum between catharsis and boredom and it has a steady rhythm.  You will need to find that rhythm, so that you can keep the pendulum in the middle, if you want to cultivate all of the benefits from them you can from them.  Such is the way of the Twink.

Spells and Abilities

Paladin abilities are straight forward and usually fall into one of three groups:  Seals and Judgment, healing spells and, and Blessings and Auras. There are few exceptions to this rule, but not many.  What follows is a brief description of your Paladin abilities and some good ways to implement them against your foes and for your allies.

Seals and Judgment

  • Judgment:  You will be using this spells quite a lot.  It is the only way to release the power of your Seals (discussed in buffs) and does a pretty decent amount of damage.
  • Seal of Righteousness:  Great for use with a two handed weapon.  Adds a significant amount of damage to your attacks along with a burst of damage when released.  Probably your most used Seal in PvP
  • Seal of the Crusader:  A good seal when using a one handed weapon and shield.

Blessings and Auras

Only one Blessing can be active on a given target at a time and other players can only be being effected by one Aura at a time as well.  Keep this in mind when choosing how and when to use your abilities.

  • Blessing of ProtectionThis is a great little spell to throw up onto an ally when they are in deep trouble.  It stops all damage to them for 6 seconds, giving them and you the needed time to lay down some healing.  They can’t attack, or take aggressive action, but it’s a small price to pay to keep them in the fight.
  • Blessing of MightA pretty straight forward ability.  It significantly raises the attack power of the target.  Really good to pop onto any melee fighters, or Hunters before a fight.
  • Blessing of WisdomThis is a spell that will be coveted by your caster allies.  Make sure to cast it before a fight, or right as things start to ramp up and keep reapplying it as needed when you can.  This is an especially important buff for you, if you are the healer and for an ally, if you are not the healer.
  • Blessing of FreedomThis is probably the most important Blessing for a Twink Paladin, as the ability to mitigate CC effects in PvP is invaluable.
  • Devotion AuraA pretty decent armor bonus, but the real benefit hear is that it applies to your whole party.  So go make some friends and spread the protection wealth.
  • Retribution AuraMaking an enemy pay for every point of damage they hit you with is awesome.  Making all of your enemies pay for attack any member of your party is exacting and beautiful.

Healing Spells

  • Holy LightYour only steady healing spell at this level and it’s a pretty decent one.  For versatility, map each level of the spell to a different button, so that you can increase your mana efficiency by using only the appropriate level of Holy Light for a given situation.
  • Lay on HandsThis handy spell is fantastic for when the chips are down.  When your close to out of mana and a friend is low on health, use this spell and take all but a Warrior back to full health.  This is particularly useful in situations where you have or are an alternate healer.
  • PurifySimple enough, right?  Removes poison and disease.  Good to counter Rogue’s poisons and Hunter’s Sting abilities.  Not much else use in PvP at this level.
  • RedemptionBrings your friends back to life.  You’ll probably be using this a lot in a group, as you will likely be the most survivable member of a group, who also has a Resurrect spell.

Other Spells:  Since Righteous Fury is useless in PvP, the only other spells worth mentioning at this level are Hammer of Justice for a nice little stun CC effect and Divine Protection, which is basically Blessing of Protection, but for the Paladin and it’s much cooler.  Both have their uses, especially in a pinch. For example, if you are low on health and mana, you could stun your attacker, throw up Divine Protection and them Lay on Hands.  Suddenly things are lookin’ up.

Talents

Paladins have many talents that increase the efficacy of their already robust spell set.  Fortunately, to a Twink of level 19, there are only three builds that are of concern to you.  Your role will be, whether focusing on damage, protection, or healing, largely a support one. The only real nuance is the level of support you want to offer.

Pure Support:  This is the most basic build for a level 19 Twink to be a fully competent support team member and it’s dead simple.  Max out Improved Devotion Aura and Improved Blessing of Might for the perfect balance of protection and damage.

Versatile Support:  A little more useful, but with less umph.  Max out Improved Devotion Aura and then max out Guardian’s Favor to get the most out of your Blessing of Freedom.  Use the last three points in Improved Blessing of Might to get a solid bit of damage as well.

Pure Damage:  This is largely for soloing, or if you simply want to focus on being the biggest damage dealer in the group.  Max out both Divine Strength and Divine Intellect to maximize your mana pool and your attack power.

These are the most straight forward and popular builds for a level 19 Twink Paladin.  They are not the only builds.  If you’d like to try your hand at making your own build, or simply want to experiment with talents, without having to break the bank every time you respec, try out the Paladin Talent Calculator and do it yer dang self!

BiS Gear

For gear, the Paladin is much akin to the Warrior in many respects.  Their gear is more difficult to come by than most of the other classes and it tends to be more powerful and offer greater protection, especially in the cases when a Mail item is BiS.  You are not going to be able to get it all on your own, so either have an Alt or Main that is wealthy, or make friends quickly.

Another note for those playing as Paladins:  With respect to any armor you wear, any properly leveled Mail armor that ends in “of the Eagle.” is an excellent choice for a substitution to a given mail slot item on this list.  So keep an eye out and when comparing, look for the item that offers an overall balance. This is also true for any weapons you find.

Enchantments

Enchantments are always going to be a very important part of a truly maxed out Twink.  Which enchantments are the best for which class (and which build) are just as important as getting the enchantments in the first place.  These are the best enchantments for your BiS equipment, though some slot items may have multiple choices, depending on your play style. Either way, make sure you get them all.

Buffs

There are a ton of disparate and useful consumables, both short and long term, that are of note to any Twink Paladin.  Some entries on this list might be situational, or feel niche, but all have their uses.

Elixirs

Great long term buffs that are helpful for long or drawn out conflicts.  Remember that only one Battle and one Guardian Elixir can be active at a time.  Fortunately, there is only one Battle Elixir of use to a Twink Paladin at this level.

Battle Elixirs

  • Elixir of Giant Growth:  This is mostly for Paladins that want to focus on damage over support, but having it in your back pocket isn’t a bad idea.

Guardian Elixirs

  • Elixir of Wisdom:  Not of use if there is a Mage in the group, but if not then the small bonus to intellect that it offers goes a long way at this level.
  • Strong Troll’s Blood PotionThis one is a boon in that it can help you to not worry about your own health for a bit, while you focus on your allies.  Particularly useful if multiple party members are in need of healing at the same time you are.
  • Elixir of DefenseNo Paladin ever said no to more armor for free, so you shouldn’t either.

Potions

A tried and true staple of adventurers from time immemorial.  Keep one or two handy at all times.

  • Healing PotionThese are great to pop after you’ve thrown up a Divine Protection to get in a quick burst heal.
  • Lesser Mana PotionThese are easy to waste and more valuable to you than a healing potion.  Keep as many handy as you can and use them carefully.
  • Minor Rejuvenation PotionThe only class other than the Paladin that finds these handy potions more useful are Shamans.  Restoring both mana and health at the same time is always a good thing.
  • Minor Magic Resistance PotionA good potion to have on hand for when an enemy group has multiple damage types.  You may want to use it yourself, or give it to a weaker party member who is more likely to be targeted.  Then again, you can always just rez them.

Scrolls

Not always the best choice, especially if better party buffs are to be had, but scrolls can be a big help in providing buffs that the Elixirs and allies that you have don’t provide.

  • Scroll of Intellect:  This is definitely not the best intellect buff out there, but if it is all that is available, definitely use it.  Not doing so is just leaving mana by the poolside.
  • Scroll of Protection II:  Not as good as the Elixir of Defense, but fantastic if you don’t have one of those.

Team Buffs:  Really, the only allied buff that help casters at this level are Arcane Intellect Mark of the Wild and Power Word: Fortitude.  If you have a Mage Priest, or Druid in your group, ask ’em for these ones.

Other Consumables:  Here are a few odds and ends that you might go ahead and grab if you have the option to.  Never forget that every little bit helps.

  • Minor Wizard Oil: Stacks with enchantments and adds to your Judgment damage.  Get it.
  • Curiously Tasty OmeletAs previously mentioned, this is the dead simplest recipe to get that offers the best Well Fed bonus for this level.  You can easily get the ingredients as well at the AH.

You know posses all of the knowledge and wisdom needed to create the perfect level 19 Twink Paladin.  How you choose to use this power you have been granted is, of course, your decision, but remember…once you start down the griefer path, forever will it dominate your destiny – consume you it will.  As it did Uther’s apprentice…No pressure though. Have fun!
