Season of Discovery (SoD) Class Roles

Season of Discovery’s announcement at Blizzcon introduces a wide array of new playstyles available. These are enabled by a series of new abilities available to each class using a new system similar to enchants/glyphs (but applied to items) called rune engravings. You can see all available runes in our Season of Discovery Talent Calculator.

We’ve made a table below of available class and role combinations that players can choose.

Hunters may potentially have tank options due to the Beast Mastery rune engraving.

New Roles

New roles available for players in SoD.

Mage – Addition of a Healer role thanks to Mage Rune Engravings
Rogue – Addition of a Tank role thanks to Rogue Rune Engravings
Shaman – Addition of a Tank role thanks to Shaman Rune Engravings
Warlock – Addition of a Tank role thanks to Warlock Rune Engravings

Enhanced Roles

These are roles that technically existed however were minimally viable before the announced new class abilities from rune engravings.

Druid – Improved Melee DPS role thanks to Druid Rune Engravings
Hunter – Improved Melee DPS role thanks to Hunter Rune Engravings
Paladin – Improved Tank role thanks to Paladin Rune Engravings
Priest – Improved Ranged DPS role thanks to Priest Rune Engravings

Hunters getting true taunt, pet scaling, and a 30% boost to pet health an aggro.
Gonna be seeing a scorpion tanking Aku’mai boys.

Is it just me who thinks these changes are a bit too drastic? If it was retail I would not bet an eye, but I think its a bit too much for classic honestly.
