Paladins are one of the best classes to solo with in the arena, as they have a high survivability rate with their access to plate and healing capabilities.  That being said, Paladins are also always welcome in almost any group setting, or situation. If you want to heal and support your allies, if you want to smite and destroy your enemies, if you want to be the shield that guards the Eastern Kingdoms – A Paladin is a good class for you.

Races

The choice of race for just about any character can be a difficult one.  Fortunately for you, Paladins, not only have two races to choose from, they can only be played by one faction.  The Alliance is the only home for devoted champions of the light, so if you’re a Horde player, or your main is a Hordie, you might want to think about a Shaman.  If you’re interested in a more general understanding of all of the WoW races, go ahead and click here to see a more detailed and slightly lore based description of the races.  Ahead are listed the races available to Paladins and the Racial Traits pertinent to playing that class as a Twink.

Alliance

  • Dwarf:  Dwarves can counter the Bleed, Poison and Disease effects that some classes wield with Stoneform.  The ability also offers a short term Armor bonus which is great.  Frost Resistance is good for countering frost Mages and the damage from Hunter’s traps.  Most players would not even mention Find Treasure, but a lot of your BiS gear is going to cost you, so the more gold that you can line your pockets with, the better off you’ll be.  Not to mention that you might just find a piece of your gear in a chest.
  • Human:  Mace Specialization and Sword Specialization will be pretty helpful, especially early on, as many of your best weapons will likely be one or two handed maces and swords.  Perception is a good edge against Rogues in Battlegrounds and sometimes in the arena.  The Human Spirit will help with health and Mana regeneration, which is important for a Paladin.  Like the Dwarf’s Find Treasure, Diplomacy might not seem worth mentioning, but anything that will help you pinch pennies is a good thing and some of the most important BiS items can only be purchased from reputation based vendors.

Professions

There are a lot of professions to choose from, which can make deciding which ones to go with hard.  Fortunately, one of the coolest professions is also an absolute necessity for a Twink of any class. Engineering.  There are a plethora of gadgets, devices and bombs that are extremely useful within Battlegrounds and you won’t want to miss out on them.

While Engineering is a necessity, you’re other Profession is also important.  Which ones you’ll be interested in will largely depend on your class.

What follows is a description of each of the Professions that should be of interest to a level 29 Twink Paladin and why.

Engineering

For any Twink, at almost any level, Engineering is an absolute necessity.   You’ve got explosives that offer CC effects, like the Mithril Frag Bomb (the stun effect of which can work against even level 60 characters).  Plus some bonus CC with the Discombobulator Ray and anti-CC from the Minor Recombobulator.  You’ll find a distinct advantage of items like the Parachute Cloak, as well.

Enchanting

Enchanting is probably the best choice for players who are not supporting their Twink with another character.  It has few expensive reagents that must be truly gathered, most being products of disenchanting items you are already likely to pick up.  It also offers lucrative selling opportunities with the many materials you will acquire from breaking down all of the Green and Blue items you do not need.  It can also offset the cost of getting your own enchantments some, as higher level enchanters are sometimes on the lookout for lower level materials.

Alchemy

If you are being supplied herbs and reagents by another character, then Alchemy can be an extremely useful Profession to endeavor upon.  The ability to simply create the many potions and elixirs that offer decided advantages in PvP at this bracket, instead of having to go shop for them, almost pays for itself.  Alchemy can also be a great way to make money, especially if the reagents and materials can be acquired cheaply.

Mining

You might just want to go ahead and take up mining, even if you plan to fund your Twink with an alt, or your main.  Twinking in general is expensive, but Twinking a Paladin is even more so. Paladins need a ton of gold for gear repair and while the cost of a mount might be mitigated slightly, any costs you can further mitigate are invaluable.  You can sell metal bars that you’ve smelted to Blacksmiths directly or on the AH, though you may not wish to sell all that you acquire, as many of the raw materials for Engineering come from Mining.

Blacksmithing

This might not be a bad choice if you can level it quickly and get some decent low level leveling gear, but only if you are also funded by a miner.

Other Professions

The truth is that other than the above professions, no others are at all viable for a Paladin.  TailoringLeatherworkingHerbalism and Skinning should all simply be avoided, because none of them are of any use to someone wearing Plate, who does not also having Alchemy as a first choice of profession.

Secondary Skills

CookingCooking has but one benefit to any Twink at any level bracket.  The Well Fed Buff.  The food that offers the highest possible Well Fed bonus at this level is the Soothing Turtle Bisque, which gives a +8 bonus.  You can get the recipe to cook this food from Kelsey Yance in Booty Bay.  Some players may wish to go for the Giant Clam Scorcho, as it is acquired through a faction based cooking quest.  This is still viable, but is more complicated to acquire than the Turtle Bisque.  The choice is, of course, yours.

First Aid:  The only thing to worry about here is to get your First Aid maxed as high as it will go, so that you can use the Heavy Runecloth Bandage, which can heal you almost completely full with just one bandage.  To do this, you will need the three books Expert First Aid – Under WrapsManual: Heavy Silk Bandage and Manual: Mageweave Bandage.  The only trouble is that, because you still can’t get your Secondary Skills up to 300 yet, you’ll have to find someone to craft the bandages for you.  Alternatively, you could simply purchase them off of the AH.

Fishing:  This skill is not as important at this level bracket, but it’s still a great way to increase your income, especially while you’re bored and waiting around near some water.  This is especially important for Paladins, who require a lot of gold to outfit. Take any opportunity you can to fish, because each time you fish is a chance to catch a rare fish that can earn you some good money.  It’s also not a bad way to get Cooking and Alchemy reagents to increase those skills.

Spells and Abilities

Paladin abilities break, like so many other class abilities, break down into three basic groups.  For Paladins, the groups are Holy, Protection and Retribution. What follows is a short description of all of the abilities available to a Paladin of level 29 that are pertinent to Twinking.

Holy

  • Holy Light:  This is the Paladin’s main healing spell and at this level, it’s pretty decent.
  • Flash of Light:  This is a nice little fast healing spell, that is just a touch more Mana efficient than Holy Light.
  • Lay on Hands:  This handy spell is fantastic for when the chips are down.  When you’re close to out of Mana and a friend is low on health, use this spell and take all but a Warrior back to full health.  This is particularly useful in situations where you have or are an alternate healer.
  • Purify:  Simple enough, right?  Removes poison and disease.  Good to counter Rogue’s poisons and Hunter’s Sting abilities.  Not much else use in PvP at this level.
  • Redemption:  Brings your friends back to life.  You’ll probably be using this a lot in a group, as you will likely be the most survivable member of a group, who also has a Resurrect spell.
  • Blessing of Wisdom:  The last of the lighter touch holy spells at this level, Blessing of Wisdom is highly sought after by all classes that use Mana, but in particular Clothies who are Mana dependant.
  • Seal of Righteousness:  While still a Holy spell, this is the old stand by for a Retribution Paladin and great ability for Paladins who want to use two handed weapons.
  • Consecration:  A great Area of Attack (AoE) spell, of which the Paladin has few.  Consecration does Holy damage to all foes within striking distance and then some for kind of a while.
  • Exorcism:  You might be asking yourself why this would even appear on this list, as it seems like it’s only useful in PvE, but there is one target in PvP that can be harmed by this spell.  The pets of all Warlocks are demons and as such, take damage from Exorcism and similar spells.

Protection

  • Shadow Resistance Aura:  This spell is fantastic when in a group and fighting against Warlocks and Shadow Priests, but especially Warlocks, who delight in filling a battlefield with as much Damage over Time (DoT) shadow damage as possible.  Fun fact: More Horde races can play as Warlocks than Alliance races. Coincidence? Probably not.
  • Hammer of Justice:  An instant 4 second stun?  Yes please.
  • Divine Protection:  This spell keeps you from taking any kind of physical damage for 8 seconds.  Giving you time to heal, pop an elixir, change weapons, or anything else you can do in 8 seconds.
  • Blessing of Protection:  This is a similar spell to Divine Protection, only you can cast it upon your allies.   This is a literal lifesaving spell if your main Healer is in danger of death. Pop it on them and then they or you can get them back to full.
  • Seal of Justice:  This is a decent alternative to Hammer of Justice, which might not cost quite as much Mana.  It also has a chance of keeping an opponent stunned for longer, with successive attacks.
  • Concentration Aura:  This is a great aura to have active if you have a large amount of Casters in your party or battle group.  It’s also not bad for a casting heavy Paladin themselves.
  • Devotion Aura:  This is a Paladin ability that no one will complain about and that most players want more anyway.  Essentially giving your entire party the equivalent of a Plate chest piece in armor tends to be helpful.
  • Blessing of Kings:  If no one asks specifically for a particular blessing, always have this active.  This spell is not only fantastic in its own right, it also stacks will all other stat increase class spells, including Mark of the Wild.
  • Blessing of Freedom:  This Blessing is only situational in its usefulness.  Use when you suspect an opponent of preparing to use any kind of CC.

Retribution

  • Retribution Aura:  One of the best Auras to have active, if you are tanking, or just taking a lot of damage.  Anything that makes your opponents pay for every bit of damage they do to you is where it’s at.
  • Seal of the Crusader:  Absolutely fantastic for just dolling out raw damage and with each swing keeping the duration going, it can last through a battle.
  • Blessing of Might:  Highly sought after by all Warriors, Rogues and the occasional Druid, this spell will make your friends amongst those who do Melee damage.
  • Vindication:  This spell should be used when engaging any other primarily Melee classes.  Lowering a Warrior’s Strength and a Rogue’s Agility will go a long way to tearing down their defenses and attacks to defeat them.
  • Seal of CommandNot a bad Seal to use, in general.  There are better ones, of course, but the chance for so much extra damage on each swing is good.
  • Judgment:  You will be using this ability a lot.  It releases the charges of your seals and is the only way to do so.  Always have this one on your tool bar.

You will likely want a mix of different abilities, depending on your play style, so familiarize yourself with these.  You’ll want to have the best possible button load out before you even engage in any PvP

Talents

When it comes to talents, a Paladin of level 29’s options are a bit more streamlined.  Instead of borrowing from multiple spec trees, you’ll more than likely focus on just one and your role will be a lot more definite than the previous bracket level.  You’ll also be in less of a support role and be taking on your main role more firmly. Here are a few of the best builds for Paladin’s at this level.

Retribution/Damage:  Go with this build if you are mostly interested in focusing on dealing out damage and less in aiding, or supporting your allies.  First, max out Improved Blessing of Might for the increased damage for you and your allies.  Then max out Improved Seal of the Crusader, Conviction and Improved Judgment to increase your own regular damage output.  Finally, go full in on Vindication to gain that ability and lower your enemies’ damage output, and then finish off with Eye for an Eye to make enemy spell slingers pay for their wickedness.

Protection/Support:  This build is for players who want to focus on tanking and protecting their allies.  Start off by maxing out Improved Devotion Aura and then Guardian’s Favor.  Then put three points into Precision or, Toughness to get to the next tier.  Take the point of Blessing of Kings, so that you can use that ability, and then put four points into Anticipation to get to the final tier and get some good Defense.  Finally, max out Improved Hammer of Justice to maximize your stunning ability and put your last two points into Improved Concentration Aura to help out the other casters in your party.  Alternatively, you could max out ICA instead of IHJ, to be a purely defensive, support build.

Holy/Healing:  Use this build if you want to focus completely on being the group’s main Healer.  Begin by maxing out Divine Intellect and Spiritual Focus to maximize your Mana efficiency and counter interruption.  Then, in the third tier, max out both Healing Light to maximize your healing and Improved Lay on Hands to give your off Healer a boost in armor when you’ve got them back to full.  Lastly, max out Illumination to recoup Mana every time you crit heal.

These are the most straight forward and popular builds for a level 29 Twink Paladin.  They are not the only builds and in fact, some other hybrid builds might be better for your play style…  If you’d like to try your hand at making your own build, or simply want to experiment with talents without having to break the bank every time you respec, try out the Paladin Talent Calculator.  It’s a great way to see just how those talents will play out in the long run.

BiS Gear

For gear, the Paladin is much akin to the Warrior in many respects.  Their gear is more difficult to come by than most of the other classes and it tends to offer greater protection.  You are not going to be able to get it all on your own, so either have an Alt or Main that is wealthy, or make friends quickly.

Another note for those playing as Paladins:  With respect to any armor you wear, any properly leveled Mail armor that ends in “of the Eagle.” is an excellent choice for a substitution to a given mail slot item on this list.  So keep an eye out and when comparing, look for the item that offers an overall balance.

Enchantments

The enchantments for your gear are almost as important as the gear itself.  Make sure to get all of the best enchantments for each gear slot item that can be enchanted.  If your Main is not an enchanter, then acquiring these enchantments will be expensive, so keep that in mind.  Here are all of the best enchantments for a level 29 Twink Paladin.

Buffs

There are a bevy of different, useful consumables, both short and long term, that are of note to any Twink Paladin.  Some entries on this list might be situational, or feel niche, but all have their uses.

Battle Elixirs

  • Elixir of Ogre’s Strength:  A decent little strength buff, which will give you a slight edge.  Nothing to write home about, but if you have it, use it.

Guardian Elixirs

  • Elixir of Wisdom:  It is doubtful that you will want to take the time to go and acquire this.  Still, if you don’t have a mage in your group and you do have one of these, use it.  6 Intellect is 6 intellect.
  • Elixir of Fortitude:  Everyone likes more health.  You should too.
  • Mighty Troll’s Blood Potion:  This one is good in a group to help mitigate your self healing and allow you to use the excess Mana to aid your friends.
  • Elixir of Greater Defense:  This one might be better suited for some of your damage taking allies, but chances are, they’ve brought their own.  If so, use this for yourself. No adventurer of Azeroth was ever the worse for having more armor.

Potions

  • Greater Healing Potion:  Healing potions are the bread and butter of any adventurer worth their salt.  You know what this is and you know when to use it.
  • Mana Potion:  You can use this for yourself, or hold on to it in case an ally needs Mana later.  Your choice.
  • Minor Rejuvenation Potion:  A hold over from the last level bracket.  This is the one you should definitely save for yourself, as few other classes will find it useful.
  • Minor Magic Resistance Potion:  Another lower level item that can still prove useful.  Magical resistance across the board, no matter how little, is nothing to turn your nose up at.
  • Jungle Remedy These may be less useful to you, but your allies will find them helpful when you are not around.  You’ll have to farm them in STV, or purchase them off of the AH if you want them though.
  • Fire Protection Potion:  Good if you are facing Mages, or Warlocks
  • Frost Protection Potion:  Best saved for when a Frost Mage is about.
  • Holy Protection Potion:  Helps defend against the attacks of other Paladins and Priests.
  • Nature Protection Potion:  Absorbs the attacks of Shaman, Druids, and the poisons and stings of Rogues and Hunters.

Scrolls

  • Scroll of Protection II:  Don’t use with the Elixir of Defense, but if you don’t have one of those, it’s pretty great.
  • Scroll of Stamina:  More health and durability is always a good thing.  This might be your best choice of scrolls, in fact.
  • Scroll of Strength:  This is a great one if you plan on being in Bear Form doing melee damage for a long period of time.
  • Scroll of Intellect:  Great if you don’t have a Mage in the party, or if they’re busy and you want a bit more punch for your spells.
  • Scroll of Spirit II:  Again, not as good as Divine Spirit, but if you don’t have a Paladin in your party and are doing a lot of healing, this is fantastic.

Team Buffs

Class buffs are also important.  Be sure you get the one that fits what you are doing.  Arcane Intellect if you’re doing a lot of caster damage, or healing and Power Word: Fortitude for everything else.   Mark of the Wild is a fantastic buff as well.

Other Consumables

You have been blessed with all of the knowledge of how to create the perfect level 29 Twink Paladin in World of Warcraft.  The Light is now your ally, and a powerful ally it is. Use your abilities wisely and with care. Unless there’s a bunch of Hordie scum out there to crush, then go nuts!  Have fun!
