Rune Engraving is a new system for Season of Discovery. It allows each class to tailor their gameplay experience by unlocking new unique abilities! In this guide you’ll find all of the runes that are currently available for Warlocks in Phase 3 of SoD. You can also see them all in our Season of Discovery Talent Calculator.

Levels with a single asterisk (*) are runes that have a specific level requirement while those with a double asterisk (**) are our recommendations based on the level of enemies in the area or other factors such as abilities that will make the process easier.

Below you’ll find a quick overview of how to get each of the SoD Warlock Runes. Refer to our individual guides for more detailed walkthroughs!

Chaos Bolt Rune

Chaos Bolt is a Warlock Rune for the Gloves slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Locate a frozen mob at one of the following locations:
  • Dun Morogh: Gol’Bolar Quarry (69, 58)
  • Durotar: east of Razor Hill (69, 58)
  • Elwynn Forest: island in Stone Cairn Lake (77, 51)
  • Tirisfal Glades: north of Brightwater Lake (58, 44)
• Attack it with fire spells to destroy it and loot the rune. You may need the help of another Mage or Warlock for this.

Dance of the Wicked Rune

Dance of the Wicked is a Warlock Rune for the Boots slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Interact with a Reckless Warlock corpse in one of the following locations to loot a Brimstone Carving:
  • Alterac Mountains: at a cave between Ruins of Alterac and Strahnbrad (54.4, 49.6)
  • Desolace: in Sargeron in the northeast of the zone (74.8, 13.2)
  • Stranglethorn Vale: at the Gurubashi Arena between Booty Bay and Grom’Gol (30.8, 47.0)
  • Thousand Needles: at Highperch, the ledge in the northwest of the zone (11.2, 40.4)
• With Brimstone Carving in your bags, channel Hellfire until you get the rune.

Demonic Grace Rune

Demonic Grace is a Warlock Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

Dun Morogh:

• Collect the following items from mobs in Dun Morogh:
  • Ominous Tome from Frostmane Shadowcaster and Frostmane Seer in the Troll cave west of Brewnall Village
  • Wendigo Blood from Wendigo and Young Wendigo at the cave west of Kharanos
  • Wolf Jawbone from wolf mobs including Winter Wolf and Snow Tracker Wolf near Kharanos
• Use the Ominous Tome at the Ritual Stone at Shimmer Ridge (42, 36).
• Kill Soboz, a level 8 demon, to loot your rune.

Durotar:

• Collect the following items from mobs in Durotar:
  • Ominous Tome from Voodoo Troll and Hexed Troll in Echo Isles
  • Makrura Leg from Makrura Clacker and Makrura Shellhide on the eastern coast
  • Kul Tiran Skull from Kul Tiras Sailor and Kul Tiras Marine in Tiragarde Keep
• Use the Ominous Tome at the summoning circle on the south of the main island in the Echo Isles (67, 87).
• Kill Soboz, a level 8 demon, to loot your rune.

Elwynn Forest:

• Collect the following items from mobs in Elwynn Forest:
  • Ominous Tome from Kobold Geomancer in Jasperlode Mine as well as Defias Rogue Wizard on the island in Stonecairn Lake
  • Gnoll Blood from Gnoll mobs northwest of Stonecairn Lake and in Forest’s Edge
  • Wolf Jawbone from the many Wolf or Prowler mobs found all around the zone
• Use the Ominous Tome at the summoning circle in the basement of the Slaughtered Lamb in the Mage Quarter of Stormwind City (29, 75).
• Kill Soboz, a level 8 demon, to loot your rune.

Tirisfal Glades:

• Collect the following items from mobs in Elwynn Forest:
  • Ominous Tome from Darkeye Bonecaster in Agaman’s Mill
  • Gnoll Blood from many Gnoll mobs Garren’s Haunt
  • Wolf Jawbone from the Darkhounds found all over the zone
• Use the Ominous Tome at the summoning circle in The Sewers, the tunnel on the eastern side of Undercity (24.1, 41.6).
• Kill Soboz, a level 8 demon, to loot your rune.

Demonic Knowledge Rune

Demonic Knowledge is a Warlock Rune for the Boots slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Speak with the Dalaran Agent at Ariden’s Camp in the northeast of Deadwind Pass (52, 36) to get Ariden’s Sigil.
• Equip Ariden’s Sigil and look for locations where you get the Dark Presence buff:
  • Arathi Highlands (60, 40)
  • Badlands (58, 54)
  • Deadwind Pass (43, 29)
  • Desolace (65, 25)
  • Duskwood (23, 47)
  • Swamp of Sorrows (69, 28)
  • The Barrens (52, 36)
• In each of the above locations, use Ariden’s Sigil to summon a Dark Rider, a level 41 elite, and kill it to loot a relic.
• When you have all seven relics, return to the Dalaran Agent to trade them in for your rune.

Demonic Pact Rune

Demonic Pact is a Warlock Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Visit Grizzby inside the inn at Ratchet in The Barrnes.
• Purchase a Rune of the Pact from him for 3 gold and use it to get the rune.

Demonic Tactics Rune

Demonic Tactics is a Warlock Rune for the Chest slot. Here’s how to get it:

Elwynn Forest:

• Interact with a Dead Acolyte near Jasperlode Mine (56.7, 57.7) to loot Acolyte’s Note and Unidentified Artifact.
• Speak with Maximillian Crowe, the Warlock Trainer in the basement of the inn at Goldshire (44.4, 66.2) to get a Powerless Artifact.
• Return to the Dead Acolyte and use the Powerless Artifact on the runestone to get the Blood Offering debuff.
• Speak with Gakin the Darkbinder in the Magic Quarter of Stormwind City (25.6,77.8) while you have the debuff to get the rune.

Tirisfal Glades:

• Interact with a Dead Acolyte east of the lake (77, 45) to loot Acolyte’s Note and Unidentified Artifact.
• Speak with Rupert Boch, the Warlock Trainer in Brill, who is upstairs in the inn (61.6, 52.4) to get a Powerless Artifact.
• Return to the Dead Acolyte and use the Powerless Artifact on the runestone to get the Blood Offering debuff.
• Speak with Carendin Halgar in the Mage Quarter of Undercity (86.0, 25.4) while you have the debuff to get the rune.

Everlasting Affliction Rune

Everlasting Affliction is a Warlock Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Hand in Waylaid Supplies crates until you reach Friendly reputation with  Azeroth Commerce Authority or  Durotar Supply and Logistics.
• Purchase the rune from a Supply Officer. Supply Officers can be found near the Auction House in each major city.

Grimoire of Synergy Rune

Grimoire of Synergy is a Warlock Rune for the Belt slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Reach level 30 and get the Metamorphosis rune. You’ll then get a letter in the mail from Doan.
• Visit the Warlock camp in The Barrens on the other side of the central road from Camp Taurajo (49.2, 57.2) and pick up A Solid Foundation from Raszel Ander.
• At Bough Shadow in northeast Ashenvale (90.3, 40.1), use the invisibility potion you received to interact with a tree and collect the Bough of Shadows.
• Return to Raszel Ander and pick up Soul Vessel.
• Speak with Doan at the camp before you continue.
• Craft or buy a Soul Vessel and head to Mannoroc Coven in Desolace to find Rasziel (51.2, 82.6) and pick up Tempting Fate.
• Kill Des’Altek, the level 40 elite that spawns, to complete the quest and get the rune.

Haunt Rune

Haunt is a Warlock Rune for the Gloves slot. Here’s how to get it:

Gnome

• Reach level 2 and pick up the quest Stolen Power from Alamar Grimm, the Warlock Trainer at Anvilmar in Coldridge Valley (28.7, 66.1).
• Open a chest between two tents at the trogg camp just southwest of Anvilmar to loot the rune.

Orc:

• Reach level 2 and pick up the quest Stolen Power from Nartok, the Warlock Trainer at The Den in the Valley of Trials (28.7, 66.1).
• Open a chest at the bottom of a pool of water in the back of the Burning Blade Coven cave to the north to loot the rune.

Human:

• Reach level 2 and pick up the quest Stolen Power from Drusilla La Salle, the Warlock Trainer on the south side of Northshire Abbey (49.8, 42.6).
• Open a chest near the two outhouses in the Northshire Vineyards to get the rune (52.6, 51.8).

Undead:

• Reach level 2 and pick up the quest The Lost Rune from Maximillion, the Warlock Trainer at Deathknell (30.9, 66.3).
• Open a chest inside Night’s Web Hallow in the northeast of Deathknell to get the rune (28, 58).

Incinerate Rune

Incinerate is a Warlock Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Kill Incinerator Gar’im, a level 23 elite in a cave in Render’s Valley in the southeast corner of Redridge Mountains (77, 85).
• Loot the rune.

Invocation Rune

Invocation is a Warlock Rune for the Belt slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Kill Syndicate Conjurors at Stromgarde Keep in southwest Arathi Highlands to loot 10 Conjurer’s Pendants.
• Use Drain Soul on one of the Syndicate Conjurors’ Voidwalkers to get a Soul of the Void.
• Go to the top floor of one of the houses nearby and use both items on the Void Prism you find there.
• Kill the level 36 elite that spawns to loot the rune.

Lake of Fire Rune

Lake of Fire is a Warlock Rune for the Pants slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Buy Demolition Explosives for 1 gold from Zixil, the goblin vendor who patrols the road between Tarren Mill and Southshore in Hillsbrad Foothills.
• Use the Demolition Explosives on top of the Rubble in the large ruined building in Durnholde Keep (79.7, 41.0).
• Loot the Storage Locker that appears to get the rune.

Master Channeler Rune

Master Channeler is a Warlock Rune for the Chest slot. Here’s how to get it:

Loch Modan:

• Purchase a Malevolent Pie from Greishan Ironstove, a vendor who patrols the road along the west side of the zone.
• Eat the pie and wait about 10 seconds for the Hellish Indigestion debuff to wear off, and you’ll get the rune.

Silverpine Forest:

• Use Curse of Recklessness on Sadistic Fiend, a level 19 elite demon inside the Deep Elem Mine in the center of the zone (56.6, 46.4).
• Defeat the demon to get the rune.

The Barrens:

• Cast Life Tap at the Altar of Thorns at Thorn Hill east of the Crossroads (58.0, 26.0).
• Use Health Funnel on your pet until you die. You will be revived and rewarded with the rune.

Westfall:

• Kill any of the various Harvester Golems that can be found around the farms in Westfall to loot Spare Reaper Parts.
• Kill Dust Devil air elementals in the open fields of the zone to get an Elemental Core.
• Combine the Spare Reaper Parts and Elemental Core to get a Prototype Engine.
• Use the Prototype Engine to activate a level 18 Harvest Reaper Prototype at one of the farms.
• Defeat the Harvest Reaper Prototype to loot the rune.

Metamorphosis Rune

Metamorphosis is a Warlock Rune for the Gloves slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Loot an Orb of Des from the Demonic Reliquary in the Tower of Ilgalar in Redridge Mountains (80, 49)
• Loot a Bough of Altek from the Tower of Althalaxx in Darkshore (56, 27)
• Speak with Doan Karhan near Camp Taurajo in The Barrens (49, 57) to pick up the quest The Orb of Soran’ruk.
• Loot a Soran’ruk Fragment from Twilight Acolytes along Zoram Strand in Ashenvale or in the Blackfathom Deeps raid.
• Loot a Large Soran’ruk Fragment from Shadowfang Darksouls in the Shadowfang Keep dungeon.
• Return to Doan Karhan to turn in all of the items you have gathered and pick up the quest The Conjuring.
• Collect 10 Blood of the Legion from demons at Demon Fall Ridge in southeast Ashenvale.
• Interact with the altar at Demon Fall Ridge (79, 80) to summon some demons.
• Use Drain Soul on every demon that spawns and finally on a Searing Infernal.
• Speak with the Mysterious Traveler who appears to pick up the quest Mysterious Traveler.
• Return to Doan Karhan to turn in the quests and get your rune.

Shadow and Flame Rune

Shadow and Flame is a Warlock Rune for the Belt slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Pick up the quest Highway Robbery from an Extinguished Campfire near the Kodo Graveyard in Desolace (47, 54).
• Speak with Bibbly F’utzbuckle at the northern crossroads in Desolace (63, 39) to progress the quest to On the Lam.
• Speak with Tokal inside the inn at Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale (27, 77) to pick up the quest Cherry for Your Thoughts?.
• Buy a Cherry Grog from the nearby vendor, Nixxrax Fillamug, and bring it to Tokal to get the quest No Honor Among Thieves.
• Use the boat on the southern shore of Arathi Highlands near the bridge (53, 91) to travel to the east coast.
• Speak to Illari Duskfeather and either agree with her (Alliance only) or fight her to get Illari’s Key.
• Use the key to open the nearby Jewel-Encrusted Box to loot the rune.

Shadow Bolt Volley Rune

Shadow Bolt Volley is a Warlock Rune for the Gloves slot. Here’s how to get it:

Darkshore:

• Kill either of these demons to loot the rune:
  • Delmanis the Hated outside the Tower of Althalaxx (57.6 26.0).
  • Xabraxxis, who is summoned during the quest The Blackwood Corrupted (52.6, 33.6).

Loch Modan:

• Attack the Demonic Remains in the southeast corner of Loch Modan (72, 69) with shadow spells such as Shadow Bolt.
• Kill Graix, the level 18 demon that spawns, to loot the rune.

Silverpine Forest:

• Kill Ravenclaw Guardians and Ravenclaw Drudgers at Beren’s Peril in southeast Silverpine Forest (60, 74) to loot a Tortured Soul.
• Use Life Tap or Health Funnel if you’re at full health and then use the Tortured Soul.
• Kill the Tortured Soul, a level 20 elite ghost that spawns, to loot the rune.

The Barrens:

• Use Drain Soul on Supervisor Lugwizzle on top of the oil platform at the Sludge Fen (56.3, 8.6) to get a Soul of Greed.
• Use the Soul of Greed at a Hungry Idol just south of the platform to get the rune.

Westfall:

• Use Drain Soul on Old Murk-Eye along the southeast shore to get a Soul of the Sea.
• Use the Soul of the Sea at a Idol of the Deep in the water off the coast (26, 70).
• Kill the Horror of the Deep, a level 20 that spawns, to loot the rune.

Shadowflame Rune

Shadowflame is a Warlock Rune for the Boots slot. Here’s how to get it:

• Use Shadow Ward and activate the Ritual of Sacrifice in southeast Desolace (80, 78).
• Kill Seductress of Ceyna, a level 38 elite that spawns, to loot the rune.

Soul Siphon Rune

Soul Siphon is a Warlock Rune for the Chest slot. Here’s how to get it:

Dun Morogh:

• Use Drain Soul on any critter to get a Pure Soul Shard.
• Use Drain Soul on Captain Beld, a level 11 Dark Iron Dwarf southeast of Gol’Bar Quarry (77.9, 62.2), to get a Tainted Soul Shard.
• Turn both shards in to Gaklik Voidtwist in Kharanos near the Warlock Trainer (47.2, 53.6) to get the rune.

Durotar:

• Use Drain Soul on any critter to get a Pure Soul Shard.
• Use Drain Soul on Gazz’uz, a level 14 orc in Skull Rock (51.5, 9.7), to get a Tainted Soul Shard.
• Turn both shards in to Darmak Bloodhowl in Razor Hill near the Warlock Trainer (54.6, 41.6) to get the rune.

Elwynn Forest:

• Use Drain Soul on any critter to get a Pure Soul Shard.
• Use Drain Soul on Hogger, everyone’s favorite level 11 elite, at the gnoll camp (27.8, 89.8) to get a Tainted Soul Shard.
• Turn both shards in to Damien Kane in Goldshire near the Warlock Trainer in the inn basement (44.0, 66.2) to get the rune.

Tirisfal Glades:

• Use Drain Soul on any critter to get a Pure Soul Shard.
• Use Drain Soul on Maggot Eye, a level 10 undead gnoll at Garren’s Haunt (58.7, 30.8), to get a Tainted Soul Shard.
• Turn both shards in to Denton Bleakway in the Magic Quarter of the Undercity near the Warlock Trainer (83.8, 27.4) to get the rune.
