Gear

Below you will find our Pre-Raid BiS gearing options along with each phase’s BiS gearing options! As each new phase is released, this page will be updated to better reflect gear available. To maintain accessibility and simplicity, we have ignored PvP (Arena and Battleground) items and have only included items obtained through PvE, and wherever a specific profession – Leatherworking, for example – is required, we have included an alternative in case you do not have the profession.

You placed Armor Cap and Defence in your two top priority spots, but neither link provides either of these. I also noticed resilience as your third priority, but none of this gear has that, either.

In your pre-bis gear, you have a meta gem that will not be utilized because you stacked defence gems and have zero blue gems. That gear also requires you to have done plenty of heroics/raids, which you won’t be tanking in that gear, whatsoever. Maybe you were suggesting that players start with Feral DPS?

Your bis gear, you can’t have those two rings equipped at the same time. One literally “grows” into the other one by turning in a Karazhan rep. quest AND the ring, to get the new, upgraded ring. You also stacked nothing but stamina gems, and still didn’t reach either the defence or armor cap.

Resilience is easy enough to obtain through level 70 PvP gear but I see you don’t have any of that listed, either.

When you place a stat in the top 3 on your priority list, it’s usually a given that you will include some gear that has that stat on it in your gearing list.

For example, Exorcist’s Leather Helm has resilience and doesn’t require the player to participate in PvP.

And every class has a BiS set of gear – this is not really situational.

What fights, in TBC, resemble Patchwork from Classic?

As a tank, you find a balance between threat generation and survivability. Druids are literally the best example of not needing more than one set of gear. I’m not even sure as to where you were trying to go with your gearing since neither set reached any cap – threat is only good if you don’t die, which given your gearing choices, will likely happen.

As far as trash is concerned, you wouldn’t dive deep into threat generation since many pulls in Karazhan, for example, are AoE pulls, which means that you are going to be taking a LOT of damage. On these pulls, 9 times out of 10, you’re not expected to hold threat very long. In trash pulls with an elite, you’d grab that, and survive the relentless amount of damage they cause you.

Going into Heroics for the first time, this is the advised gearset – it achieves the defence cap, has almost 7% Hit Rating (Which exceeds your recommended minimum) and a decent amount of armor for a 66.71% physical damage reduction, compared to your 68.06% damage reduction that requires us to have already entered Heroics.

Going into Karazhan for the first, this would be more recommended as a set for tanking – it achieves the defence cap, has almost 6% Hit Rating (Which is JUST shy of your recommended minimum) and a decent amount of armor for a 69.12% physical damage reduction, compared to, again, your 68.06% damage reduction. My gearset also sees an increase of 1.21% Dodge and 250 total health.

I’ll leave you to fix your last Phase 1 BiS list.

And if you never raided in TBC before, what are you basing your guides off of exactly? I’m someone who appreciates effort and acknowledges good work but I’m a little confused with this one.

Hey brother i like the guide and dont pay the others much mind. In retail i went full time bear towards the end of naxx and achieved worlds 2nd most geared bear due to H lk never dropping his polearm. The itemization is fine, they dont realize that bear tanks come with the playstyle and determining what stat will play the biggest factor for the fight. BIS lists are created by points on a spreadsheet, not actual mechanics etc so its hard to write a true gear this way guide since different factors come into play. Good work though!
