The Warlock is one of two classes in World of Warcraft that is capable of summoning and controlling full-time combat pets. Where Hunters must locate and tame the beasts they wish to summon, Warlocks automatically learn to summon a specific list of demons as they level. Each one has its own abilities and strengths, and although most Warlock builds will choose one specific demon and stick with it, it’s good to know what else you have available when the situation calls for it!
Available Demons
There are four standard demons that every warlock can summon, as well as one that is unique to the Demonology specialization. Each demon also has a counterpart that will be summoned in its place when the Grimoire of Supremacy talent is taken.
Standard Demons | Grimoire of Supremacy Demons |
---|---|
Summon Felguard (Demonology) | Summon Wrathguard (Demonology) |
There are also two demons who can be summoned on a shared cooldown, Summon Doomguard and Summon Infernal. These demons are not permanent, can’t be controlled, and will not dismiss your currently active demon. They do, however, have Grimoire of Supremacy alternatives: Summon Terrorguard and Summon Abyssal. Demonology Warlocks are also able to summon Wild Imps, but they do not offer any special abilities and are not controlled like normal demons. Finally, there is the Eye of Kilrogg, which you can control but does not fight.
This guide will focus on the demons listed in the table above, which can be fully controlled and provide the Warlock with some unique abilities.
Demon Abilities
All of the fully controlled demon pets will have their own abilities which can be viewed in the Pet tab of your spellbook or on the Pet Action bar in your interface. They have some basic commands that are common to all pets as well as some unique abilities of their own.
Common Passives
There are two passive abilities that are shared by all of your controllable demons:
- Avoidance
- Prevents your demon pets from being annihilated in AoE attacks.
- Fel Energy
- Your demon pet’s resource bar that they use to cast their spells.
Basic Commands
These abilities are available to all of your controllable demon pets.
Movement
Follow – Orders your pet to follow you.
- Your demon will stay close to your character. This is its default behavior.
Move To – Orders your pet to move to a target location.
- You will be able to mark a place on the ground to position your pet manually. It will stay there until told otherwise.
Stay – Orders your pet to stay at its current location.
- Your pet will stay put exactly where it is when this command is given, until told otherwise.
Combat Behavior
Attack – Orders your pet to attack your current target.
- Using this button or keybind will tell your pet to attack, and they will continue attacking the target until it dies or they are told otherwise.
Assist – Your pet will assist you.
- Your pet will attack any target that you attack. Note that they will begin attacking after you land a hit, not when you begin casting.
Defensive – Your pet will only attack enemies that attack you or your pet.
- Your pet will attack anything that attacks them or your character.
Passive – Your pet won’t attack until ordered to do so.
- Your pet will not attack anything until told otherwise. This is the safest setting if you’re worried about accidentally pulling or just want to keep your pet out of trouble.
Unique Abilities
Each demon has a few abilities that are unique to them. Some can be toggled on and off by right-clicking them in your spellbook or action bar, allowing the demon to use them automatically. If disabled, you will still be able to use them by clicking on the button or using the appropriate keybind. Other abilities can only be used manually.
Among these abilities is a special ability for each demon that you can use through the Command Demon ability as well as an ability that your own character will gain if you take the Grimoire of Sacrifice talent. Each demon’s unique abilities are covered in their specific sections below. Abilities marked with an asterisk (*) can be toggled.
Imp/Fel Imp
Summon Imp is the first demon you will be able to control when you create a Warlock. This little rascal’s greatest strength is his ranged attack, which allows him to change targets more quickly than your melee demons since he doesn’t have to run up to them first. He is also able to free himself of stuns of roots. He brings a friendly dispel and an ability that will heal your character, making him a solid option for support.
The Imp’s Grimoire of Supremacy equivalent is Summon Fel Imp. His abilities are mostly the same except that his dispel works on up to 3 targets at a time.
- Command Demon Ability: Cauterize Master
- Grimoire of Sacrifice Ability: Singe Magic
Abilities
Voidwalker/Voidlord
Summon Voidwalker and its Grimoire of Supremacy equivalent, Summon Voidlord, are your basic tanking demons. Both bring some strong defensive abilities, a taunt, and the ability to disarm enemies. Pet taunts don’t work on most endgame bosses. You will rarely want to use this guy in endgame content, and when you do it will usually be to get his Shadow Bulwark for yourself via Grimoire of Sacrifice.
- Command Demon Ability: Disarm
- Grimoire of Sacrifice Ability: Shadow Bulwark

Succubus/Shivarra
Summon Succubus and its Grimoire of Supremacy equivalent, Summon Shivarra, are most commonly used in PvP, where their crowd control and invisibility abilities are much more effective. You may occasionally find them useful in PvE too.
- Command Demon Ability: Whiplash/Fellash
- Grimoire of Sacrifice Ability: Whiplash

Felhunter/Observer
Summon Felhunter and its Grimoire of Supremacy equivalent, Observer, are the highest DPS demon pets for non-Demonology Warlocks. If you’re playing Affliction or Destruction, this will be your go-to choice for most endgame PvE content. Their Devour Magic/Clone Magic doubles as a purge and a heal for your character, and Spell Lock/Optical Blast give you a powerful interrupt.
- Command Demon Ability: Spell Lock/Optical Blast
- Grimoire of Sacrifice Ability: Spell Lock

Felguard/Wrathguard (Demonology)
Summon Felguard and its Grimoire of Supremacy equivalent, Summon Wrathguard, are particularly strong demons that can only be summoned by Demonology Warlocks. They are quite sturdy and can both tank damage and dish it out. Demonology Warlocks will almost always want to use this guy in endgame PvE content.
This demon has a ranged stun and a healing reduction debuff. He can charge enemies, giving him better uptime than some of your other melee demons. Most importantly, he does very good AoE damage with Felstorm/Wrathstorm.
- Command Demon Ability: Felstorm/Wrathstorm
- Grimoire of Sacrifice Ability: Pursuit

How to Rename Your Demon Pet
Each of your demons has a name randomly assigned to them the first time they are summoned. To get a new name, you will have to abandon your current demon and get a new one. This demon will also have a random name. There’s no way to choose a specific name for your demon. You can keep replacing them until you get one that you like, but it will cost you each time.
To get a new demon, locate a Demon Trainer NPC. They can be found near any Warlock Trainer. For 50 gold, you can pay them to help you abandon your current demon and summon a new one. (I’d call you heartless, but you are a Warlock, after all.)
You can replace any of your standard demons this way, including the Felguard and Grimoire of Supremacy demons. Each time it will cost 50 gold, regardless of which demon you are replacing or how many times they have already been replaced.
