Jewelcrafting Overview: Perks, Tools, & Designs
The Jewelcrafting profession allows players to cut raw gems into powerful items for augmenting equipment and also to craft unique equipment for the Neck and Finger slots. It utilizes materials that are acquired through Mining. Common pairings are Mining or one of the other Mining-dependent crafting skills, Blacksmithing or Engineering. It also pairs well with Enchanting, allowing you to fully augment most equipment.
What You Get From Jewelcrafting
The most significant perk you’ll gain from Jewelcrafting is the ability to use Serpent’s Eye gems, which can only be equipped by Jewelcrafters. You can have up to two of these gems socketed at any time and they each add 480 of their chosen stat, as opposed to 320 from normal gems. That adds up to an extra 320 of any stat. While all crafting professions provide a similar bonus, most of them only apply to primary stats, so if your character is looking to stack a secondary stat instead this can be a particularly strong bonus.
Gems
Beyond the above Jewelcrafter-specific gems, you can craft a lot of different types of gems that can be used by any character. Below are the new gem cuts for Mists of Pandaria. As mentioned above, Serpent’s Eye gems are exclusive to Jewelcrafting. There are also Rare gems and Uncommon gems, with Perfect cuts of Uncommon gems offering the same stats as Rare gems. Cut gems require a raw gem of the same suffix as the only material (e.g. to make a Bold Serpent’s Eye, you only need a Serpent’s Eye).
Meta Gems
Meta gems only come as Rare items and are the most valuable/expensive to craft, offering unique effects in addition to their stat bonuses.
- Agile Primal Diamond
- Austere Primal Diamond
- Burning Primal Diamond

Mounts
There are five new mounts that can be crafted with Jewelcrafting in Mists of Pandaria. The designs can be purchased from the Order of the Cloud Serpent with the appropriate reputation. The mounts are quite expensive to craft, especially Jeweled Onyx Panther, which requires the other four mounts as materials.
Mount | Reputation | Materials |
---|---|---|
Jeweled Onyx Panther | Exalted | – Jade Panther x1 – Ruby Panther x1 – Sapphire Panther x1 – Sunstone Panther x1 |
Ruby Panther | Revered | – Orb of Mystery x1 – Primordial Ruby x20 – Living Steel x4 – Serpent’s Eye x2 |

Sunstone Panther | Honored | – Orb of Mystery x1 – Sun’s Radiance x20 – Living Steel x4 – Serpent’s Eye x2 |
Battle Pets
There are two Battle Pets that can be crafted by Jewelcrafters in Mists of Pandaria:
Battle Pet | Materials |
---|---|
Jade Owl | – Wild Jade x3 – Spirit of Harmony x3 |
Sapphire Cub | – River’s Heart x3 – Spirit of Harmony x3 |
The designs for these pets have a chance to drop from a few different sources:
- Treasures of the Vale, a reward from Golden Lotus dailies.
- Ancient Guo-Lai Cache, a treasure chest found inside the Hall of the Serpent in the northwest corner of Vale of Eternal Blossoms (21.4, 16.9). Requires Ancient Guo-Lai Cache Key to open (drops from Shao-Tien mobs in the same zone).
- Serpent’s Heart, which can be crafted from 3x Serpent’s Eye starting in Phase 2.
Cosmetic & Vanity Items
Scrying Roguestone is a fun item that can be crafted via Jewelcrafting using 1x Roguestone.
You can make a few monocles for the Head slot, which are widely sought after for transmog: Jeweler’s Amber Monocle, Jeweler’s Sapphire Monocle, and Jeweler’s Ruby Monocle.
There are also Stardust and Shadow Crystal Focusing Lens, which are fun cosmetic items.
Gems
There’s a new set of gems to be gathered in Mists of Pandaria. These gems can be collected while Mining from nodes in Pandaria or by using Prospecting on Pandaria ores.
Uncommon Gems
Rare Gems
Special Gems
- Serpent’s Eye is made by combining 10x Sparkling Shard, which are obtained by Prospecting Pandaria ores.
- Primal Diamond is crafted from other gems via Transmute: Primal Diamond (Alchemy), or later in Phase 2 via Primal Diamond (Jewelcrafting).
Tools
A Jeweler’s Kit is required for crafting most Jewelcrafting designs. It can be purchased from Jewelcrafting Supplies vendors. There are no other tools available for the profession.
Gem Bags
Gem Bags can be very useful for Jewelcrafting. They are larger than other bags of the same level and can carry only cut or uncut varieties of gems.
- “Carriage – Exclusive” Gem Studded Clutch: Sold by Dawn Radue, the Bag Merchant in Stormwind City.
- Gem Pouch: Sold by Bag Vendors in major cities.
- Bag of Jewels: Made with Tailoring. Pattern available from The Consortium quartermasters at Honored reputation.
- Luxurious Silk Gem Bag: Made with Tailoring. Pattern available from Ayla Shadowstorm inside the Molten Front quest hub in Hyjal.
Racial Bonuses
The Draenei racial passive ability Gemcutting gives +10 to your Jewelcrafting skill, allowing you to craft higher level recipes sooner. This bonus loses its value when you reach maximum skill level, since there are no designs that require greater than 600 skill. It’s very useful while leveling the profession, however.
Discovering Designs
Most gem designs in Mists of Pandaria are learned by crafting Facets of Research. These reward you with a random design of the given type. If you have learned all of the recipes of that type, you will be able to discover a design of another color instead.
- Imperial Amethyst
- Primordial Ruby
- River’s Heart
- Sun’s Radiance
- Vermilion Onyx
- Wild Jade
- Secrets of the Stone
Meta gems (Primal Diamond designs) are learned from BoP recipes that are world drops in Pandaria. You should be able to easily acquire these through questing and farming on your Jewelcrafter. You won’t be able to trade or buy them elsewhere, you must loot them yourself.
Golden Lotus dailies give Treasures of the Vale, which have a chance to contain designs for meta gems or battle pets.
Order of the Cloud Serpent reputation will allow you to purchase designs for mounts.
Mai the Jade Shaper at Greenstone Village in the Jade Forest is a Jewelcrafting Trainer who will teach you several Pandaria designs, including Neck and Finger items and Serpent’s Eye gems.
