Herbalism Leveling Guide 1-600
Herbalism can be a profitable and relaxing way to spend your time in World of Warcraft. Who doesn’t love frolicking through the countryside picking flowers?
Typically players will take up Herbalism in order to gather materials for crafting with Alchemy or Inscription. If you are leveling one of those professions alongside Herbalism, you will find lists of required materials in our Alchemy Leveling Guide and Inscription Leveling Guide. You can gather all of those materials while leveling Herbalism and save some time in the long run.
If you maxed out your Herbalism skill in Cataclysm, you can skip most of the level ranges and start at the Zen Master section. Later in the expansion (Patch 5.3), you will be able to level Herbalism entirely in Pandaria if you choose. For that you can also skip to the last section of this guide.
Tips for Leveling Herbalism
- Be sure to always have Find Herbs enabled so you can see nearby herb nodes marked on your minimap!
- Lowering the Ground Clutter slider in your graphics settings will reduce the amount of generic grass you see, which can be beneficial for being able to see herbs on the ground.
- There are several pieces of equipment and a few enchantments that can help you herb more efficiently. You can find them all in our Herbalism Overview.
- If you’re not having luck in the locations we’ve suggested, you can try another zone of the appropriate level range. Divide your current gathering skill by 5 to get the correct zone level. You can also see a full list of herb nodes and locations in our dedicated guide.
- Having the fastest mount you can get is beneficial for any type of open-world farming. If you’re leveling your character at the same time as your Herbalism, always train the next Riding skill as soon as it becomes available.
- Picking an herb that gives Herbalism skill will also give you a little bit of character experience, so working on your Herbalism can be a nice break from questing when leveling your character.
- Don’t forget the Darkmoon Faire quest, Herbs for Healing, which can be completed every time the Darkmoon Faire is active (every two weeks in WoW Classic). This quest requires a minimum skill level of 75 and grants 5 skill points upon completion.

Leveling 1-600
Apprentice 1-75
Apprentice Herb Gathering can be learned right at character level 1.
Currently in the Mists of Pandaria Classic Beta, the skill level that is required to pick Briarthorn, Bruiseweed, and Mageroyal has been lowered to 1. This is likely a mistake, but if it stays that way, you can jump ahead to the next section for level 1-75 as well.
If your character is below level 20, you can just pick herbs in your current questing zone.
