Engineering Leveling Guide 1-600
Leveling Engineering in MoP Classic gives you access to a wide variety of useful and fun utility items, but requires some expensive materials and extra crafting steps. It’s one of the most complicated but rewarding professions in the game. This guide aims to provide the most optimal route from 1 to 600 Engineering skill in the Mists of Pandaria expansion so you can get straight to crafting all of the cool gadgets your inventory can hold.
Most of the materials for Engineering can be obtained via Mining, so having a character with that profession is advisable in order to avoid having to purchase all of those materials from other players. If you’re leveling the two skills side by side, be sure to take a look at our Mining Leveling Guide. We’ve listed all of the materials you need below.
If you reached max skill level in Engineering during Cataclysm, you can skip most of the level ranges and start at the Zen Master section.
Tips for Leveling Engineering
- You’ll need some tools for crafting most Engineering schematics, starting with a Blacksmith Hammer, which you can purchase from a Trade Supplies or Engineering Supplies vendor. Other tools will be crafted as you go. Be sure to hang on to these until you are able to make your Gnomish Army Knife, which will replace most of them.
- It’s always worth checking the Auction House for cheap materials, including crafted components that other players have already made such as bolts and powder.
- When you go to start crafting, be sure that you have plenty of space in your inventory, as you will be crafting multiple components for many of the recipes. Don’t fill your bags with materials and leave yourself no space for the items you will be making.
- Use the Filter button in the Engineering window and click “Has skill up” to only show recipes that will give you skill points. This will make it a lot easier to scroll through your options.
- Don’t forget the Darkmoon Faire quest, Talkin’ Tonks, which can be completed every time the Darkmoon Faire is active (every two weeks in WoW Classic). This quest requires a minimum skill level of 75 and grants 5 skill points upon completion.
Trainer Locations
Here are some of the most convenient Engineering Trainers for leveling. We recommend staying in your faction’s capital city for most of the process due to the proximity to your bank and Auction House. That’s also where you will be able to learn an Engineering Specialization. We have a complete list of trainers on our Engineering Trainer Locations page.
- Pandaria: Sally Fizzlefury is at Nesingwary’s Safari in the southwest corner of Valley of the Four Winds.
/way Valley of the Four Winds 16.0, 83.0
- Dalaran: There are 3 different trainers located in the Magus Commerce Exchange: Didi the Wrench, Findle Whistlesteam, and Timofey Oshenko.
/way Dalaran 39.0 25.0

- Horde: “Jack” Pisarek Slamfix is found in the Goblin Slums.
/way Orgrimmar 36.6, 86.6
Required Materials
To follow this guide, you’ll need a lot of materials that are obtained via Mining. Keep in mind that you will need to smelt the ore into bars. You’ll also need some cloth and other miscellaneous supplies. Some of the material amounts will depend on the Engineering Specialization you wish to pursue. Those are marked with (Gnomish) or (Goblin).
Schematics
Schematic: White Smoke Flare is the only schematic you will need that can’t be learned from a trainer. It can be purchased from the following vendors or the Auction House:
- Neutral: Wind Trader Lathrai at the Lower City in Shattrath
/way Shattrath City 72.6, 31.6
- Horde: Captured Gnome at Zabra’jin in Zangarmarsh

Leveling 1-600
Apprentice 1-50
Apprentice Engineering can be learned at character level 5.
- Pick up a Blacksmith Hammer from the nearest Trade Skills or Engineering Supplies vendor and keep it in your bags.
- Rough Blasting Powder should get you past 30 and Handful of Copper Bolts should get you past 50. Make the full amount of each and hold onto them as you will be using them in the next section for another schematic.
Skill Level | Recipe | Materials | Quantity |
---|---|---|---|
1-30 | Rough Blasting Powder | – Rough Stone x1 | 50 |
30-50 | Handful of Copper Bolts | – Copper Bar x1 | 25 |
Materials Summary
- Copper Bar x25
- Rough Stone x50
Journeyman 50-125
Journeyman Engineering requires character level 10 and Engineering level 50 to learn. You can start crafting the required items for your Engineering Specialization in this level range. We’ve divided this section accordingly. If you don’t care about learning a specialization right now, you can take the Gnomish Engineering route and skip the Bronze Tube.
Gnomish Engineering
- Make 20 Coarse Blasting Powder even if you hit 90 skill since you will need them to craft Coarse Dynamite. Don’t worry if you don’t quite hit 90.
- Save the Bronze Tube for the next section.
- After you craft Clockwork Boxes, you’ll right-click them in your inventory to disassemble them for extra skill points. Not every box will give a skill point when used, but they will always give one point when crafted. To save materials, open your boxes as you craft them so you can see how many skill points you still need. You may not have to make all 15 to reach 125.
Skill Level | Recipe | Materials | Quantity |
---|---|---|---|
50-52 | Arclight Spanner | – Copper Bar x6 | 1 |
52-70 | Rough Copper Bomb | – Rough Blasting Powder x2 – Handful of Copper Bolts x1 | 25 |

Zen Master 500-600
Zen Master Engineering requires character level 80 and Engineering level 500 to learn.
- You’ve now reached the new recipes for Mists of Pandaria Classic, so at this point you can start crafting items you want to use at endgame. Feel free to deviate from the options below if there is another item that you know you will be making anyway. We’ll focus on the cheapest/most efficient skill gains.
- Ghost Iron Bolts give 3 skill for each craft while they’re orange (until 525). Craft these and High-Explosive Gunpowder until they turn gray. You will be using lots of both, so you might as well get skill points for crafting them. Craft the bolts first while they’re orange, and then you can do the rest in whatever order you like.
- Mist-Piercing Goggles are a relatively efficient way to reach 600 skill if you don’t have other items you would prefer to make, such as a gun or scope or the Wormhole Generator. Spirit of Harmony may be expensive, however.
- There are some recipes that require 600 skill, so don’t forget to visit your trainer one last time when you reach the level cap.
Skill Level | Recipe | Materials | Quantity |
---|---|---|---|
500-550 | Ghost Iron Bolts | – Ghost Iron Bar x3 | 80 |
(500-550) | High-Explosive Gunpowder | – Ghost Iron Bar x1 | 20 |
