Mage vs. Hunter - I just can't decide

Hello there,

please help me with my class decision. I've been struggling to choose between mage and hunter for ages now. I have barely played WoW (like half a year during WotLK). I am definitely looking forward to experiencing WoW from scratch.

HOWEVER...

By hook or crook I just can't decide between mage and hunter. Currently, I am leaning towards a human mage (I will NEVER play gnome) because mage is extremely strong in Classic. However, a nightelf hunter would be quite tempting as well. After having watched and read several class guides, this is my pro/con list:

HUMAN MAGE
+ portals
+ unlimited food
+ quick leveling,
+ high endgame viability

- humans mages are worse than gnome mages unfortunately
- cloth armor is ugly
- I will play a warrior as twink, that would be 2 human characters. I would like a bit of variety

NIGHTELF HUNTER
+ good race/class combination
+ fun to play (I guess?)
+ extremely fast leveling

- sucks in endgame, won't get invited to raids(?)
- doesn't have as much utlity as a mage

Can someone help me with my decision? Is hunter really that bad in endgame? I would really like to play hunter but the endgame struggle doesn't seem to be worth it so I will likely play mage.

Thanks in advance for any input!

What are your goals in classic? What do you want to achieve? What type of gameplay raids/dungeons/pvp/leveling is fun for you?

Without that no one can give you good answer.

I would never play a hunter so an easy choice for me is Mage!
I love casters, spell generaters, over melee and hunters!

Cloth armor is not ugly!
Hunters do not suck at end game, people who suck at the class suck at end game, Hunters are fine! They also bring alot of utility!

Honestly gnome is better than human BECAUSE theyre small. Your ugly armour looks not as bad because it's smaller

I'd say go and try both of them up to 15 or so and decide

Seeing that you have only played wow for half a year in wotlk i would suggest trying out a instant 60 server to test both classes. That way you can figure out the class/playstyle that you like best, you might even find that a third class is more fun to play.

It would be a shame to ding 60 and feel like rerolling.

Mostly PvE.

Then I would just roll mage. You will be invited into dungeons and raids without problems and as you have little experience, mages are pretty easy in pve. Rotation is easy and after few fails you will CC without issue.

There will always be more Mages in a raid than Hunters, unless they can't get any Mages because there aren't any available.

Hunter is definitely more engaging to play. More complex rotation, pet management etc. That being said, as a Hunter you will always do less DPS than an evenly geared and skilled Mage past BWL. In MC and BWL it's about the same. Mage is much, much easier to play, especially on Alliance side because you get Blessings to give you mana and reduce your threat (which are the two biggest difficulties to manage when raiding as a Mage). Don't expect to be top DPS in a guild with competent players, and you won't be disappointed. As a good Hunter you'll get recognition anyway, because good Hunters are rare and bring nice boons to the raid.

Hunters have a pretty high skillcap, even in PvE. There are so many things you can do to improve the speed of a dungeon run for example. Toggling Aspect of the Pack to travel faster, putting a Freezing Trap under the healer just before the pull. Looking out for the healer if he pulls aggro. You wear mail and can kite, if the healer pulls aggro, Distracting shot the mob and kite it, or have your pet Growl/Intimidation and tank it. Chaining Freezing Traps with Feign Death and some kiting. Frost Traps so Mages can focus on Arcane Explosion instead of Blizzard (AE does WAY more DPS). Those are just some of the things that make good Hunters stand out from the masses.
Mages are more wanted overall because they are the better class, objectively. And it doesn't help that Mages scale better the more you have of them (due to Winter's Chill and Ignite). But that doesn't mean Hunters are bad. Hunters still bring good utility to raids (Tranq shot, Trueshot Aura) and can still push out good DPS. You'll be on par with Mages and Warlocks in MC/BWL. It's in AQ40 when those casters get sick gear that Hunters really fall behind.

I would keep an open mind and watch the developments we see leading up to Classic launch. There are still some concerns for cone of cold and a TON of functionality issues with hunters. Hunters have some game breaking issues at this point and are in a pretty bad state. If you are down to these two classes, I would wait for more updates from Blizz before finalizing your decision.

Many hunters like myself were anticipating a few changes from our experience on private, but the version of hunter we may be seeing in Classic, and certainly the one we saw during the beta, is a shell of its former self.

Really looking forward to next stress test, hopefully we will get more answers on the issues with pets

Let's address the even larger concern first: You are rolling alliance over Horde.

If you like getting dead-zoned in PvP, roll hunter.
If you like 1-shotting people with PoM Pyro, go mage.

If all you want to do is endgame, go mage.
If you want to enjoy all of the game go with either.

Isn't there the same problem with pets on retail since like pandaria? If that's the case, I wouldn't have much hopes for them fixing that.

If you like 1-shotting people with PoM Pyro, go mage.

*Terms and conditions apply. PoM Pyro may only be used once every 3 minutes. Speak to your local mage trainer for more information.
